In an exhilarating display of resilience, Rishabh Pant fired back to form with a striking second-innings knock of 66 off just 69 balls during the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle on August 18. His efforts helped India set a formidable target of 372 runs for the hosts. The innings featured four boundaries and two sixes, drawing admiration for its character.
India had previously scored 462 runs in their first innings, while Sri Lanka could manage only 284, granting India a significant first-innings lead of 178 runs. The second innings, where India added 193 runs, highlighted not only Pant’s resurgence but also solid contributions from his teammates, including Devdutt Padikkal’s 44 runs after his impressive first innings and KL Rahul’s 35.
In a post-match analysis, former Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara commended Pant’s performance, stating, “Although it might be 60-odd runs, I think it was an outstanding knock considering the situation.” Pujara elaborated on the pressure Pant faced due to underwhelming performances in white-ball formats, remarking on the importance of Pant’s mental strength during pivotal moments.
Pujara pinpointed Pant’s enhanced shot selection as a significant factor distinguishing his two innings in the match. Where he faltered in the first innings, trying aggressive shots against the new ball, he shifted gear in the second. “He was using the sweep and reverse sweep efficiently against off-spinners and choosing to defend wisely when necessary,” Pujara noted, emphasizing Pant’s return to his natural game while balancing caution.
Pant’s innings also marked a monumental personal milestone, as he became the first Indian and only the fourth batter globally to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. Achieving this in just 4,918 balls, he set a record for the quickest accumulation of sixes in Test history, demonstrating his prowess in the longest format of the game.
As the match progressed into the late stages, Sri Lanka ended Day 4 at 84 for 4 in their second innings, requiring 288 runs more to claim victory with six wickets still in hand. With Pant contributing significantly to India’s position, the outlook for the final day appears promising as India eying a victory that would seal their dominance in the match.
Pant’s electrifying performance, coupled with strategic improvements in his batting, not only secured a bright spot for him personally but also positioned India favorably as they seek to conclude the first Test successfully. The excitement builds as Day 5 promises to be a thriller!
