Bangladesh Rest Taskin Ahmed for Afghanistan Test

Bangladesh have taken a careful but telling selection call ahead of their one-off Test against Afghanistan, resting pace spearhead Taskin Ahmed for the match in the UAE. The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed a 15-member squad on Saturday, with the Test scheduled from October 9 to 13.

The move signals a clear focus on workload management and the wider demands of the Test Championship cycle. Alongside Taskin, wicketkeeper-batter Amite Hasan has also been left out, while Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy have been brought back into the squad for the lone red-ball fixture.

Taskin rested as Bangladesh look long term

Taskin’s omission is the headline decision, but it is not a sign of any immediate fitness concern. BCB chief selector Habibul Bashar said the bowler has been given a break so Bangladesh can keep him fresh for bigger assignments later in the cycle.

“We have decided to give rest to Taskin from this Test match,” Bashar said. “As we are prioritizing the Test Championship so we are looking forward to getting his full service during the Test series against West Indies.”

He also hinted that Taskin could still feature in the ODI leg against West Indies to help maintain rhythm. For Bangladesh, the calculation appears simple: preserve one of their leading pace threats now, and protect his value for the matches that could matter more in the standings.

Injury management remains part of the plan

The selection picture also includes a broader fitness watchlist. Fast bowler Nahid Rana continues rehabilitation after a Grade 2 side strain that has kept him sidelined since July.

Bashar made it clear that Bangladesh are not rushing him back for a short-term opportunity. Instead, the board wants Rana fully ready for the more demanding home Tests coming later in the cycle, especially against the West Indies and England.

“Rana will be available from October 10,” Bashar said. “We have four important WTC matches at home ahead of us, so we want to keep him ready for the two-match Test series against the West Indies and England.”

Hridoy and Jaker earn recalls after strong form

While one big name steps aside, two familiar faces return with momentum behind them. Towhid Hridoy’s inclusion comes only weeks after his unbeaten 350 for Bangladesh A against South Africa A in Potchefstroom, a knock that sent a strong message to selectors.

Jaker Ali’s return is also form-driven. He scored 94 in the same match in which Hridoy dominated the headlines, strengthening his case for a Test recall after previously coming into contention during the Australia tour discussions.

Bashar said Jaker was preferred over Amite Hasan because of that recent run of performances. “We have replaced Amite Hasan with Jaker Ali taking his form into consideration,” he explained.

That approach suggests Bangladesh are rewarding players who have handled pressure and shown rhythm in red-ball cricket. With only one Test in the series, the selectors appear determined to keep the XI competitive without overloading the pace battery.

Squad balance points to a measured approach

The squad features a mix of experience and fresh options, with Najmul Hossain Shanto leading the side. Senior names such as Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Kumer Das and Mominul Haque remain central to Bangladesh’s batting spine, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam continue to give the side stability in the spin department.

There is also pace variety in Hasan Mahmud, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury and Shoriful Islam, ensuring Bangladesh still have enough bowling depth despite Taskin’s absence. Nayeem Hasan, Musfik Hasan and Under-19 pacer Iqbal Hossain Emon will travel as reserves.
