Babar Azam Joins Desert Vipers as ILT20 Season 5 Auction Heats Up

The ILT20 Season 5 auction delivered one of its most eye-catching moments when Desert Vipers secured Pakistan captain Babar Azam, along with Naseem Shah and Fakhar Zaman, at their base prices. In a competitive marketplace filled with familiar names and sharp bidding, the Vipers made a statement by landing three major Pakistani talents in one go.

Babar’s move is especially notable given the scrutiny around his recent form. Even as his performances have drawn attention for the wrong reasons across formats, his reputation as one of the biggest names in world cricket remains intact. The UAE franchise league now becomes the next stage for a batter still searching for rhythm, runs and a strong response.

Desert Vipers make a bold triple move

The franchise entered the auction with clear intent. Babar Azam was picked for USD 80,000, while Naseem Shah and Fakhar Zaman were also secured without any price escalation beyond their listed values.

That kind of business is impressive in a pool that featured several players attracting active bids. For Desert Vipers, the trio offers a mix of experience, star power and match-winning potential, all at controlled cost.

Babar’s new challenge in UAE conditions

Babar’s presence is likely to be the headline-grabber, not just because of his profile, but because of the timing. He is currently under the spotlight in Pakistan’s domestic circuit, where his form and body language have been closely watched by fans and critics alike.

Now, the ILT20 offers something different: a fresh dressing room, different pressure, and a chance to reset. A strong campaign in franchise cricket could help him rebuild momentum heading into future international assignments.

“For a player of Babar’s class, every innings becomes a chance to rewrite the narrative,” a cricket analyst observed.

Other big names find new homes

The auction was not short on movement elsewhere. MI Emirates paid USD 380,000 for Afghanistan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi, making him one of the biggest buys of the day. Richard Gleeson also sparked interest before Sharjah Warriorz beat Gulf Giants to land him for USD 180,000.

Dubai Capitals were active too, bringing in Phil Salt for USD 80,000, Sediq Atal for USD 70,000 and Mark Adair for USD 55,000. Abu Dhabi Knight Riders strengthened with Moeen Ali, Andre Fletcher, Arab Gul, Jakeem Pollard and Gulbadin Naib, adding both depth and variety to their squad.

Pakistan players attract attention at base value

What stood out from the Desert Vipers’ business was how efficiently they operated in the market. The franchise did not need to overspend to secure Pakistan’s biggest batting name, one of its most talked-about fast bowlers, and a proven top-order striker in Fakhar Zaman.

Naseem Shah’s inclusion adds pace and quality to the attack, while Fakhar’s attacking style brings balance to the batting lineup. Together, the trio gives the Vipers a strong subcontinental core and plenty of headline value.

What this means for ILT20 Season 5

The auction has once again shown how quickly team balance can shift when marquee names enter the picture. For Desert Vipers, landing Babar could prove to be the defining move of the auction, especially if he rediscovers his touch in UAE conditions.

For fans, the appeal is obvious. A Pakistan star with a point to prove, a pace spearhead in Naseem Shah, and an explosive opener in Fakhar Zaman give the competition more storylines before the first ball is even bowled.

If Babar clicks early, the Vipers’ decision may look like one of the smartest bargains of the auction. If not, the pressure around his form will only grow louder. Either way, ILT20 Season 5 has already gained a major talking point.
