Harry McKirdy has brought an early end to his professional football career, announcing his retirement at the age of 29 after 14 years in the game. The former Swindon Town, Hibernian and Crawley Town striker said he leaves with no regrets, closing the chapter on a journey that delivered goals, setbacks, and memorable peaks.

A career that moved quickly, and often boldly

McKirdy’s decision marks the end of a career that began in the academies of Stoke City and Aston Villa before he stepped into senior football during a loan spell at Stevenage in 2016. He later had temporary moves at Crewe Alexandra and Newport County, gaining experience across the EFL before leaving Aston Villa in 2019.

From there, his career developed through a series of short but important stops. Carlisle United and Port Vale came next, before McKirdy found a defining spell at Swindon Town, where his output and energy made him one of the division’s more intriguing attackers.

Swindon spell brought his biggest numbers

McKirdy’s best-known run came in the 2021-22 season at Swindon, where he scored 24 goals in 44 matches in all competitions. That return earned him a place in the EFL League Two Team of the Season and Swindon’s Player of the Season award, underlining the impact he made in a short period.

For a striker who often played with sharp movement and a direct edge, those numbers stood out. In a career that spanned 225 senior appearances, he scored 56 goals overall, a total that reflects both his flashes of top-level form and the changing rhythm of his journey.

Hibernian move tested him in a different way

McKirdy’s move to Hibernian in September 2022 represented a fresh challenge in the Scottish Premiership, but it did not bring the same attacking return. He failed to score in 33 appearances for the Edinburgh club, with most of those outings coming from the bench.

His time in Scotland was also disrupted by a significant health concern, as he underwent heart surgery during his spell north of the border. That episode added perspective to a career that had already featured plenty of movement and adaptation.

“I never thought I’d pack it in so early,” McKirdy wrote on Instagram. “But sitting here where I am, happy in life, great people around me… how could I possibly have any regrets?”

Final chapters at Swindon, Bromley and Crawley

After returning to Swindon on loan in February 2024, McKirdy later had a short stint with Bromley before joining Crawley Town in June 2025. His spell at Crawley produced eight goals in 33 appearances last season, offering a solid late contribution before the club released him at the end of the campaign.

That release turned out to be the final step before retirement. For Crawley, it ended a brief spell with a forward who had shown enough in patches to remain a notable name at League Two level.

A career of promise, peaks and honest reflection

McKirdy’s announcement also spoke to the growing number of players who choose to step away on their own terms. Rather than chase one more contract, he framed his decision around wellbeing, contentment and the people around him.

There is a clear sense that the forward is leaving the game with gratitude as much as reflection. While his path included release, loans and injury interruptions, it also produced standout scoring form, recognition in the EFL, and a career that reached beyond 200 senior games.

Career Stat Figure
Senior appearances 225
Senior goals 56
Goals for Swindon in 2021-22 24
Games for Hibernian 33
Goals for Crawley last season 8

McKirdy’s retirement closes a story that was never ordinary. It was a career shaped by movement, momentum, and a few memorable scoring bursts, and one that now ends with the striker content to walk away at 29.
