India’s third T20I against New Zealand in Wellington started with a scare. Tilak Varma slid to stop a ball, his left knee appeared to get stuck in the turf, and he walked off with the physio. Kumar Kushagra stepped in as a substitute fielder while the team held its breath.

Tilak Varma Walks Off After Knee Injury Scare

The moment came on the second delivery of the third over. Finn Allen punched a good-length ball from Bhuvneshwar Kumar towards extra cover and set off for a quick single.

Tilak slid to stop the ball. As he tried to throw at the bowler’s end, his left knee appeared to get stuck in the ground.

How the Incident Unfolded

Tilak missed the stumps, but Allen made his ground safely. Replays showed that even a direct hit would not have run the New Zealand opener out.

Tilak then spoke with the team physiotherapist and walked off the field. Kumar Kushagra came on as the substitute, getting his first chance to take the field during the tour.

The incident raised concerns for India, though the initial signs did not suggest a serious injury. A fuller update is expected after further assessment.

India Win the Toss and Strike Early

India won the toss and elected to bowl first. The visitors kept the same playing XI, while New Zealand made three changes. Kyle Jamieson, Matthew Fisher and Adam Milne came in for Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry and Nathan Smith.

Arshdeep Removes Tim Seifert

Bhuvneshwar Kumar found swing and seam movement in the opening over. Arshdeep Singh then struck on the second delivery of his spell to dismiss Tim Seifert for two.

Seifert tried to clear his front leg and hit a swinging delivery across the line, but only managed a top edge. Axar Patel ran in from backward point, settled under the ball and took the catch despite the windy conditions.

New Zealand Fight Back in the Powerplay

The hosts responded well and reached 58/1 at the end of the powerplay. Mitchell started cautiously before hitting three fours and a six to move to an unbeaten 24 off 14 balls.

Allen also scored 24 off 16 deliveries as New Zealand recovered from the early setback.

Tilak Varma’s Form in the First Two T20Is

The scare matters because Tilak has been a key figure in this series. His first two games went very differently.

A Quiet Start in Christchurch

In the first T20I on October 22, Tilak scored six runs off 11 balls at No. 3. He struggled for rhythm and did not hit a boundary. India still chased down 225 to win by four wickets, as the other batters made up for his quiet outing.

A Match-Winning Response

In the second T20I on October 24, Tilak came in at No. 6 with India struggling at 70/5 while chasing 181. He finished unbeaten on 51 off 26 balls, with six fours and one six at a strike rate of 196.15, and won the Player of the Match award.

He and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who stayed unbeaten on 26, added an unbroken 69 off just 30 balls. India won with one ball to spare.

Match Date Batting Position Tilak’s Score Result
1st T20I, Christchurch October 22 No. 3 6 off 11 India won by 4 wickets (chasing 225)
2nd T20I October 24 No. 6 51* off 26 (SR 196.15) India won with 1 ball to spare (chasing 181)

A Record in the Field Too

Tilak also made his mark with his fielding in the second T20I, taking two important catches. That took him to 26 catches in 2026, the most by a fielder in men’s T20 internationals in a single calendar year.

That makes his sudden exit from the field in Wellington even more noticeable. He has been contributing with both bat and hands this year.

What Comes Next for India

For now, the early signs are not alarming. India will be hoping the knee issue is only a minor knock and not something that rules Tilak out of the rest of the series.

His availability could shape India’s batting order, especially after his recovery act in the previous match. Kushagra’s arrival as a substitute fielder is a reminder of how quickly plans can change in a tight series.

Fans will be watching for the next team update on whether Tilak returns to the field or is rested as a precaution.
