Drama overshadowed the football in Baku as England walked off the pitch during their Under-15 World Cup match against the Republic of Ireland. An alleged racist slur in the final minute led to the game being abandoned, and Fifa has now stepped in to investigate.
The Group C clash was in its closing stages, with the Republic of Ireland leading 4-1. Then an altercation broke out between players from both sides.
An England player went to his bench and made a complaint to the coaching staff. Match footage then showed England staff relaying the allegation to the referee, claiming a racist slur had been said.
England head coach Matt Thorpe was seen on DAZN coverage asking the referee to come over. He then called his players off the pitch, and the match was abandoned.
The exchanges were picked up in the broadcast. After the initial report from Thorpe, the referee told England’s coaching staff, “I cannot hear”.
One of Thorpe’s assistant coaches then said, “we are reporting racism”, before adding, “we do not want to play”. When another official came over to discuss what would happen after the match, the assistant replied, “No, our players do not want to play”.
He was later heard saying that a player was “upset”. Heated words were then exchanged between the two sets of coaching staff, with both saying they were trying to protect their players.
World governing body Fifa confirmed to BBC Sport that it is investigating and gathering reports. The case is expected to go to the independent disciplinary committee.
“Fifa is aware of an incident at the U-15 World Cup and Festival match between England and the Republic of Ireland. The match was abandoned by the referee following England’s refusal to continue. The official reports are being gathered, and the matter will be referred to the independent disciplinary committee, who will decide in due course.”
The Football Association (FA) said it is awaiting more information and is in touch with Fifa. It added that the wellbeing of players is a priority.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has also been contacted for comment. At this stage, the allegation has not been adjudicated, so every detail remains subject to the official process.
This is the first time the U15 World Cup and Festival has been played. Teams from 189 of Fifa’s 211 member associations are taking part, which makes it a huge global event for young players.
Matches are played eight-a-side on smaller pitches, with 20-minute halves. The tournament is meant to be a celebration of youth football, which makes this incident especially jarring.

Later on Monday, England beat Zimbabwe 2-0. The Republic of Ireland also returned to winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Cambodia.
The spotlight now turns to the investigation. Fifa will collect official reports from the match officials and both associations before the independent disciplinary committee makes a decision.
Key questions remain, including what was said, who heard it, and how the match officials handled the report. The outcome could also shape how the tournament deals with such allegations going forward.
For now, the priority for both federations is the wellbeing of the young players involved. Football fans will be watching closely to see how Fifa responds on a stage meant to celebrate the next generation.
