Mumbai Indians may be about to turn the clock back. Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to return as captain for IPL 2027, ending Hardik Pandya’s turbulent spell at the helm. The move follows a disastrous IPL 2026 campaign and a sweeping coaching overhaul at the five-time champions.
According to The Indian Express, Mumbai Indians are set to reinstate Rohit as skipper for the 2027 season. Cricketnews also reports that Rohit will take over from Pandya after the franchise’s coaching revamp.
There is a catch. Mumbai Indians have denied reports of any internal discussions on the matter, as NDTV reported separately. An official confirmation has not yet been made public.
Rohit reportedly first put forward Tilak Varma as a long-term captaincy option. The franchise did not accept that and asked for Rohit’s own commitment instead.
“Rohit initially had suggested Tilak Varma’s name but the franchise has requested him to take over captaincy which he has now agreed,” a source told The Indian Express.
The same source said a series of talks took place before Rohit flew to New Zealand. His suggestions were also sought when the new coaches were appointed.
Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024 in an all-cash trade from Gujarat Titans. He was handed the captaincy immediately, a decision that drew heavy criticism because Rohit had led the side to five IPL titles.
The tenure stayed difficult on and off the field. Crowds at Wankhede Stadium repeatedly booed Pandya during home fixtures, which showed the discontent among the fanbase.
The numbers made the case for change. Mumbai Indians won just four of 14 league games and finished ninth. The title drought now stands at six years, with the last trophy coming in 2020.
| IPL 2026 Mumbai Indians | Record |
|---|---|
| Matches played | 14 |
| Wins | 4 |
| Losses | 10 |
| Final position | 9th |
| Last IPL title | 2020 |
Midway through the season, with the team struggling badly, the franchise had reportedly explored asking Rohit to take over immediately. That did not materialise.
Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav were also considered before the franchise settled on Rohit. Tilak Varma remains in the frame as a long-term leadership prospect.
On Pandya’s future, reports indicate he has agreed to play under Rohit if a trade to another franchise does not go through.
The captaincy shake-up comes alongside a major overhaul of the coaching staff for IPL 2027. Several familiar faces are returning to the Mumbai setup.
| Role | Name | Replaces / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Head coach | Kieron Pollard | Takes over from Mahela Jayawardene |
| Batting coach | Robin Uthappa | Played for MI in the 2008 inaugural season |
| Bowling coach | Mitchell McClenaghan | Replaces Lasith Malinga |
| Fielding coach | T Dilip | Newly appointed |
| Development bowling coach | Dhawal Kulkarni | Part of the 2013 and 2020 title-winning squads |
McClenaghan played for Mumbai Indians from 2015 to 2020, a period in which the side won four IPL titles. Kulkarni was part of the squad in the title-winning campaigns of 2013 and 2020 across multiple stints.
Pollard, Uthappa, McClenaghan and Kulkarni all bring a strong link to the franchise’s past. That adds to the sense of a reset built on the club’s glory years.
Rohit’s record as Mumbai Indians captain remains the benchmark in the franchise’s history. He led the side to titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
That tally of five trophies places him level with MS Dhoni for the most IPL titles won as captain.
Everything now hinges on an official announcement from Mumbai Indians. If the reports prove accurate, Rohit will lead a rebuilt side with a new coaching group and a point to prove.
The big question is whether the return of the man who delivered five trophies can end a six-year wait. Fans will be watching closely.
