Fresh faces, a big recall and three star quicks put on ice. Cricket Australia has named its limited-overs squads for the home series against England, and the selection has plenty to talk about. Mahli Beardman is back, and two wicketkeeper-batters are set for maiden T20I caps.
England arrive for three ODIs on November 13, 15 and 18 in Perth, Adelaide and Hobart. Five T20Is follow.
The squads come right after Australia’s Test series in South Africa. Pat Cummins’ side won the opening Test but lost the series 1-2 to Temba Bavuma’s team.
| Format | Matches | Squad Size | Captain |
|---|---|---|---|
| ODI | 3 (Perth, Adelaide, Hobart) | 14 | Mitchell Marsh |
| T20I | 5 | 14 | Mitchell Marsh |
The headline selection is Western Australian pacer Mahli Beardman. He impressed on the recent Australia A tour of India, where his pace troubled a strong India A batting line-up.
Beardman played a T20I in January 2026 but has yet to make his ODI debut. He is now in contention to do that this month.
Chair of selectors George Bailey was clear about the long-term plan.
“Mahli Beardman’s recent performances for Australia A were impressive and we are incredibly excited for his return to the national team across the ODI and T20 formats. We think he can continue to develop into an all-format player across the coming years.”
Bailey also praised Liam Scott, who returns to the ODI squad. The selector said Scott learns from each opportunity and has grown his game over the past 12-18 months.
Bailey added that the series gives players from recent tours a chance to show their ability against very strong opposition.
The T20I squad has two new names. Wicketkeeper-batters Lachlan Shaw and Sam Harper get their first international call-ups.
Shaw earned his place with strong showings on the India tour and in the Big Bash League. He has also been named captain of New South Wales’ 50-over side at just 23.
Harper is the reigning BBL Player of the Season for the Melbourne Stars. He was also named in the national Test squad for the South Africa tour and spent the winter playing franchise cricket overseas.
Jake Fraser-McGurk is back after last playing for Australia in July 2025. He has been in strong domestic form for South Australia this season.
Mitchell Owen also returns, having missed the T20 World Cup and the Bangladesh tour.
Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are not in the ODI squad. The trio played all three Tests in South Africa and will get a short de-load before preparing for the home Test series against New Zealand.
Billy Stanlake is unavailable while recovering from a side strain picked up on the Zimbabwe tour. Aaron Hardie (shoulder) is also recovering. Riley Meredith and Matthew Kuhnemann missed out on selection.
Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Mahli Beardman, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Jack Edwards, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Ollie Peake, Matthew Renshaw, Liam Scott and Adam Zampa.
Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Mahli Beardman, Nikhil Chaudhary, Tim David, Joel Davies, Jack Edwards, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sam Harper, Spencer Johnson, Mitchell Owen, Lachlan Shaw and Adam Zampa.
With the big three rested, the pace attack looks fresh and young. Beardman, Bartlett and Johnson will carry much of the load against a strong England side.
Beardman’s possible ODI debut and the two maiden T20I caps will be the stories to follow. This looks like a series where new names can make an impression quickly.
