Transforming Cricket Viewing Experience

The upcoming three-match T20I series between India and Afghanistan, scheduled for September 13, 15, and 17, is set to revolutionize the cricket viewing landscape with cutting-edge broadcast technology borrowed from the FIFA World Cup 2026.

A Historic Bilateral Series

This series marks the first time Afghanistan will host a bilateral series against India, albeit outside its borders. Geopolitical issues have led to the matches being staged in New Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, selected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).

World-Class Production by ITW Universe

The production will be led by ITW Universe, renowned for its high-quality broadcasting standards. Jamie Oakford, who has directed every FIFA World Cup since 2002, will oversee the production team, bringing invaluable experience from previous productions of the UEFA Champions League finals. According to ITW Universe founder Bhairav Shanth, the goal is to provide a viewing experience that diverges from the traditional cricket coverage styles that have dominated the sport for over a decade.

“We want to move away from the same old production technology that has been used in cricket for the last 10-12 years. This series will give new experiences to the viewers and brands,” said Shanth.

Innovative Technologies to Be Introduced

Free-Viewpoint and Spatio Technology

The T20I series will introduce innovative volumetric free-viewpoint technology, enabling broadcasters to create a real-time 3D digital version of the pitch and players. This will allow virtual cameras to be placed anywhere on the field, offering unique replay angles, even from within the action.

Additionally, the Spatio system, developed by Quidich Innovation Labs, will be employed to combine a stabilized drone feed with augmented reality (AR) and real-time optical tracking of player movements. This system will facilitate field-placement graphics and detailed tactical presentations for viewers.

Ultra-Slow-Motion Cameras for Detailed Action

One of the standout features of the series will be the use of ultra-slow-motion cameras capable of recording at an astonishing 600 frames per second and above. This technology, utilizing Emperor-style or Phantom-class cameras, will enable broadcasters to showcase intricate details of fast bowling deliveries, bat-ball contact, and other crucial game moments that traditional cameras may miss.

These forensic-style replays are expected to become a distinctive element of the series, allowing fans to catch every critical play in exceptional detail.
