Sri Lanka Calls Up Mishara and Arachchige for Second Test

Sri Lanka’s cricket team is feeling the pressure as they prepare for the second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, starting August 23. With their injury list growing, the selectors have called upon batter Kamil Mishara and all-rounder Sahan Arachchige to bolster the squad.

Injury Crisis Before Colombo Test

India has taken a 1-0 lead in the series after a commanding victory in the Galle Test, winning by 165 runs. Sri Lanka now finds themselves facing a daunting task without key players Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, and Pathum Nissanka. The absence of these top-order batsmen has disrupted Sri Lanka’s batting lineup significantly.

Kusal Mendis sustained a proper hamstring injury during the Lanka Premier League, which has kept him out from the very start of the series. Already, Niroshan Dickwella was drafted in as his replacement, further complicating Sri Lanka’s squad dynamics.

Dinesh Chandimal suffered a concussion during the Galle Test on Day 4, which places him out of contention under strict concussion protocols that require at least a seven-day recovery time. While Pathum Nissanka’s absence remains unclear, it is evident that Sri Lanka’s options are becoming increasingly limited.

New Faces: What Mishara and Arachchige Bring

While the injury crisis poses challenges, the introduction of Kamil Mishara and Sahan Arachchige adds fresh energy and depth to the team. Mishara, although yet to debut in Test cricket, has made waves in the shorter formats. His recent performance of 145 runs off just 72 balls in the Major Clubs T20 tournament showcased his skills and form.

On the other hand, Sahan Arachchige also steps into the spotlight without a Test cap but comes with respectable credentials. He recently captained Sri Lanka A in the second unofficial Test against India A, where he emerged as the top run-scorer with an impressive innings of 127. Although his team lost that match by 10 wickets, Arachchige’s performance stood out as a significant contribution.

Updated Sri Lanka Squad for the Second Test

The revised Sri Lanka squad that will face India consists of:

Player
Dhananjaya de Silva (C)
Kamindu Mendis (VC)
Niroshan Dickwella
Pasindu Sooriyabandara
Ramesh Mendis
Prabath Jayasuriya
Asitha Fernando
Vishwa Fernando
Lahiru Kumara
Nishan Madushka Fernando
Lahiru Udara
Sonal Dinusha
Keshara Nuwantha
Sahan Arachchige
Kamil Mishara

As the team heads into this crucial match, the focus will be on whether the fresh talent can fill the gaps and rise against a formidable Indian side.
