Barry Hearn sets out bold long-term plan at Brentwood Town

Barry Hearn is back in football, and once again he is making it clear that he has no interest in quick fixes. The veteran sports operator, now involved with Brentwood Town, says the club’s progress must be built on strong foundations rather than reckless spending. His message is simple: ambition matters, but only if it is sustainable.

Hearn’s latest football project carries the same restless energy that has shaped much of his career across snooker, boxing, darts and fishing. But while the 76-year-old has never shied away from bold moves, he insists Brentwood Town must avoid the trap of chasing instant success at any cost.

Sustainability first at Brentwood Town

In a wide-ranging interview with FourFourTwo, Hearn explained that the club already has a workable base, but the next step must be handled carefully.

“The most important thing is to make us sustainable,” Hearn said. “Right now, we don’t lose money, but we’re ambitious on top of that.”

That balance between ambition and financial discipline sits at the heart of his approach. Hearn believes too many clubs are tempted to spend heavily before they are ready, and he has no appetite for that model at Brentwood.

His view is uncompromising when it comes to overspending. “Only an idiot throws excessive amounts of money too early,” he said, underlining his belief that success should be earned through structure, not shortcuts.

Why Barry Hearn is warning against instant success

Hearn used former Crystal Palace chairman and current talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan as an example of what can happen when ambition outruns financial reality. The point, in Hearn’s view, is not about personalities alone, but about a wider lesson in football ownership.

“History is lined with Simon Jordans,” he said. “I’m sure loved Crystal Palace but basically built up a business that then went skint.”

He added: “Others, like him, want instant success, but I don’t really do that.”

The comments reflect a philosophy that has defined much of Hearn’s business life. He is known for backing ideas early, but only when he can see a path to long-term value. For him, patience is not weakness; it is the foundation of growth.

A darts success story that took years to build

Hearn pointed to one of his most famous investments, the sport of darts, as proof that major success does not happen overnight. He said he bought into darts 25 years ago, when interest was low and the future looked uncertain.

“Everyone always says to me ‘Oh, you’re a genius seeing that coming’,” Hearn recalled. “I remind them that I bought it when nobody gave a toss.”

He continued: “It wasn’t an overnight success – it was painstaking. It was on its knees when we came in, nobody watching. Now look.”

That example appears to be the blueprint he wants to follow at Brentwood Town. Build steadily, improve the product, and make decisions that preserve the club’s future rather than jeopardise it.

What Hearn wants to bring to Brentwood

Hearn says he owns a 20 per cent stake in the club, but the size of the holding is not his main concern. What matters more, he insists, is having influence and being able to contribute his experience.

“I own 20 per cent of it. I don’t give a s**t if I own one per cent or 100 per cent – it just made sense to have a voice,” he said.

He also made it clear that he sees himself as someone who understands the commercial side of sport as well as anyone. “They know what I can bring to the table,” he said. “As the best operator in sport in the world, I know more about this business than anyone alive – mainly because I’m so f**king old.”

It is classic Hearn: blunt, confident and entirely unconcerned with softening the message. But behind the bravado is a clear footballing principle. Brentwood Town, in his view, should rise because the club is built properly, not because it gambles on spending beyond its means.

Big ambitions, careful steps

For Brentwood fans, Hearn’s arrival brings both excitement and a reality check. There is no promise of instant transformation, no suggestion that money will be thrown around simply to chase headlines. Instead, there is a plan built on patience, structure and experience.

That approach may not sound glamorous in the short term, but Hearn believes it is the only route that lasts. His career has been full of examples where the smartest move was not the fastest one. Brentwood Town, it seems, will be the latest test of that thinking.

If his track record is any guide, Hearn will back conviction over panic and growth over vanity. And in a football world still full of clubs chasing miracles, that alone makes his project worth watching.
