The BCCI is moving toward a key selection shake-up, with the appointment of its fifth selector expected soon after the interview process wrapped up on October 15. In a development that could shape India’s road to the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is now the leading candidate to take over as full-time chief selector.
The Cricket Advisory Committee has already completed interviews for the fifth member of the national selection panel, and an official announcement is expected shortly. The new selector will fill an important vacancy after former chief selector Ajit Agarkar stepped aside earlier this month.
Ojha, who has been serving as interim chairman, is understood to be in line for the top role because of both seniority and continuity. Under the BCCI constitution, the most experienced Test cricketer among the five panel members is typically elevated to chief selector, a detail that gives Ojha a strong edge.
Ojha has played 24 Tests for India and has already spent time inside the current selection setup. That familiarity matters at a moment when the board wants stability, especially with long-term squad planning now in focus.
Among the shortlisted names, former opener Wasim Jaffer has played more Tests than Ojha, with 31 appearances. However, reports suggest the BCCI is leaning toward continuity rather than a complete reset, which keeps Ojha firmly in front.
According to reports, former Mumbai cricketers Ramesh Powar and Salil Ankola are among the main contenders for the West Zone selector position. Jacob Martin and Connor Williams from the Baroda Cricket Association were also interviewed for the role.
The West Zone appointment is being watched closely because the region has traditionally carried significant influence in Indian selection matters. All four candidates bring different profiles, but the final call is expected soon.
| Candidate | India Experience |
|---|---|
| Ramesh Powar | 2 Tests, 31 ODIs |
| Salil Ankola | 1 Test, 20 ODIs |
| Jacob Martin | 10 ODIs |
| Connor Williams | Unofficial Test vs South Africa |
| Pragyan Ojha | 24 Tests |
| Wasim Jaffer | 31 Tests |
The interviews were not just about filling a vacancy. The CAC reportedly wanted to hear how candidates would handle India’s future across formats, especially with the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia now entering the planning phase.
One of the biggest talking points was Rohit Sharma’s ODI future. Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe reportedly asked candidates whether the veteran batter should remain part of India’s long-term World Cup plans. That question has become central to the selection committee’s thinking, particularly after concerns during Agarkar’s tenure about whether Rohit could stay on until 2027.
“The committee wants clarity on leadership, senior players and the next generation,” a source familiar with the process indicated.
The CAC also tested candidates on how they would approach emerging names such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The batting prodigy’s exclusion from India’s T20I playing XI despite being around the squad was raised as a case study, highlighting the balancing act between reward and readiness.
Selectors were also asked how they would respond if India captain Shubman Gill were ruled out through injury. That scenario pushed candidates to think beyond the obvious and identify backup leaders for both Tests and ODIs, a crucial area for a team building for the future.
These questions show that the next selection committee will not simply pick squads. It will be expected to manage transitions, define leadership options and keep India competitive while planning for a new World Cup cycle.
For now, the focus remains on the final announcement. If reports are accurate, the BCCI is close to locking in a panel that combines experience, continuity and a long-term vision for Indian cricket.
With Rohit Sharma’s role, young talent pathways and leadership backups all under review, the new selector will walk straight into one of the most demanding jobs in Indian cricket.
