Milestone night, tough night. Arshdeep Singh joined India’s 100-T20I club at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, October 22, but New Zealand’s batters made sure he earned it. He is now the second Indian specialist fast bowler after Jasprit Bumrah to reach the landmark.
The left-arm pacer reached his century of caps just over four years after making his debut in 2022. That is a rapid rise for a bowler who has become a regular in India’s white-ball plans.
India have built a formidable T20I record since the format began. They have won three men’s T20 World Cup titles and produced many consistent performers along the way.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from T20Is in 2024, and the current generation is building on what they left behind. Arshdeep is now a senior voice in that group.
Seven Indian men have played at least 100 T20Is. Rohit Sharma leads the list by a distance.
| Player | T20I Matches | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rohit Sharma | 159 | 2007 to 2024 |
| Hardik Pandya | 138 | Active |
| Virat Kohli | 125 | Retired from T20Is in 2024 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 113 | Active |
| Axar Patel | 113 | Active |
| Jasprit Bumrah | 100 milestone reached | Between 2016 and 2026 |
| Arshdeep Singh | 100 | Debut in 2022 |
Five Indian women have also crossed 100 T20I appearances. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur sits well clear at the top.
| Player | T20I Matches | |
|---|---|---|
| Harmanpreet Kaur | 202 | |
| Smriti Mandhana | 171 | |
| Deepti Sharma | 149 | |
| Jemimah Rodrigues | 131 | |
| Shafali Verma | 111 |
The occasion did not go to script. Arshdeep finished with 1/45 from four overs, an economy rate of 11.25.
His lone wicket was Daryl Mitchell, who edged a slower delivery to Bhuvneshwar Kumar at fine leg. It was a smart change of pace, but it was the only reward on the night.
Mayank Yadav and Axar Patel gave India early breakthroughs. Mayank removed Tim Seifert for 24, with Sanju Samson taking the catch behind the stumps.
Axar then dismissed Finn Allen for 45, and Tilak Varma completed the catch. Those wickets gave India a foothold.
New Zealand responded through an aggressive middle-overs partnership between Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs. That stand put India’s attack under real pressure.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, back in international cricket for the first time since 2022, also had a tough spell. It was a testing return for a bowler who has plenty of experience.
Arshdeep made his T20I debut against England in Southampton on July 7, 2022, and opened his international career with a maiden over. Few bowlers can claim a start like that.
His numbers across the first 99 matches show why India trust him with the new ball and the death overs.
| Stat (First 99 Matches) | Value |
|---|---|
| Wickets | 145 |
| Average | 20.30 |
| Economy Rate | 8.63 |
| Strike Rate | 14.12 |
| Best Figures | 5/51 vs New Zealand (January 2026) |
In September 2025, Arshdeep became the fastest Indian fast bowler to reach 100 T20I wickets, doing so in 64 matches. That record sits at the heart of his reputation.
He finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker at the 2024 T20 World Cup with 17 wickets. He also helped India defend their title in 2026.
His 2024 form earned him the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award. Few bowlers have a résumé like that at 100 caps.
One expensive night does not change the bigger picture. Arshdeep’s wickets, big-tournament returns and award-winning year show a bowler who delivers when it counts.
Reaching 100 caps in just over four years also shows how quickly he became a core part of India’s T20I setup. Expect him to keep climbing the list.
