The road to Los Angeles 2028 just got sharper. The ICC has locked the men’s and women’s Olympic cricket qualifiers into January and February 2028, leaving only six months before the Games begin. England has also been confirmed as host of the World Test Championship Final.

Olympic Qualifiers Shifted to January-February 2028

The ICC had originally planned to stage the Olympic qualifiers in 2027. That plan has now changed, and both events will take place in the opening months of 2028.

The update came after the ICC meetings in Dubai in October, with the revised schedule shared with member boards. It covers every competition between the 2027 and 2031 ICC ODI World Cups.

That window currently features 12 men’s events, seven women’s events and five Under-19 tournaments, including qualifiers. The tight turnaround before LA28 adds real urgency for the teams chasing a place.

Venues for the men’s and women’s qualifiers have not yet been announced. Each tournament will feature eight teams, selected by the ICC based on international rankings.

How Teams Will Qualify for LA28

Each qualifier will include the seven highest-ranked teams that have not already qualified automatically. The eighth spot goes to the winner of the Caribbean Regional Qualifier.

Cricket returns to the Olympics at LA28 for the first time since 1904. The ICC announced the six-team format for the Olympic events in June, and it has now refined the qualification rules.

Women’s Category: Four Teams Already Through

Four nations have secured direct places in the women’s competition. They earned their spots as the highest-ranked eligible teams from their continents, based on performances at this year’s T20 World Cup.

  • Australia
  • India
  • South Africa
  • Great Britain

Men’s Category: The December 31 Deadline

The men’s route works differently. The top eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania will take four direct spots.

Those places will be decided by the ICC T20I rankings on December 31, 2026. Every match between now and then could shape the final picture.

USA Men Safe, Women Under Pressure

As hosts, the United States can qualify automatically, but only if they meet a ranking condition. Both the men’s and women’s teams must reach the top 15 of the T20I rankings at some point between June 30 and December 31, 2026.

The two teams are in very different positions right now.

Team Current T20I Rank Top-15 Requirement Status
USA Men 13th Top 15 Requirement met
USA Women 19th Top 15 At risk

The men sit comfortably inside the cutoff. The women are four places short and could miss out if they cannot climb in time.

A New Route for the Extra Women’s Spot

The ICC has also changed how the additional place will be decided if the USA women fail to qualify. Previously, it was due to go to the highest-ranked team not already qualified, based on the March 1, 2027 rankings.

Now the spot will be decided by the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy, which will be held in India in February 2027. If the USA women miss the ranking requirement by December 31, 2026, the tournament standings will determine which eligible team gets the place.

That turns a rankings calculation into an on-field contest. It gives teams outside the top four a live, high-stakes target.

England Stays Home for the WTC Final

Away from the Olympic picture, the ICC has confirmed that England will continue to host the ICC World Test Championship Final. The 2027 edition will be played from June 8 to 12.

England’s role as the long-term home of Test cricket’s biggest showpiece now looks settled. It gives teams and fans a clear date to plan around.

What Happens Next

The next few months matter. The T20I rankings on December 31, 2026 will lock in the men’s direct spots and settle whether the USA women make it as hosts.

After that, the focus shifts to the Women’s Champions Trophy in India and then the qualifiers in early 2028. With only six months between the qualifiers and the Olympic Games, there will be little room for error.

For the USA women, the clock is ticking. For everyone else, the road to LA28 is now clearly mapped.
