It was a weekend of late drama across Europe. Lazio climbed to the top of Serie A, Roma twice came from behind to snatch a 3-3 draw in Naples, and Maximilian Beier struck late to send Borussia Dortmund top of the Bundesliga. Here is how the action unfolded.
Lazio now sit on top of Serie A after a 2-1 home win over Parma. They have 22 points from eight matches and are three clear of champions Inter Milan, who have played a game fewer and host Fiorentina on Sunday.
The pressure is now squarely on Inter to respond. A win for the champions would trim the gap and restore order at the top.
Lazio broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Kenneth Taylor struck his first goal of the season. Moments later, Parma’s Diego Carlos put the ball into his own net while trying to cut out a cross.
Simone Lontani pulled one back late for the visitors, but it was only a consolation. Lazio held firm to take the three points.
The match of the weekend came in Naples, where Napoli and Roma shared six goals. Frank Anguissa’s spectacular overhead kick put the hosts ahead, and Scott McTominay doubled the advantage.
At 2-0, Napoli looked to be cruising. Roma had other ideas.
Matías Soulé and Leonardo Balerdi struck within four minutes to drag Roma level. The momentum then swung again when McTominay added his second in the closing stages to make it 3-2.
Balerdi had the final word. He headed home an equaliser with a minute remaining, and the match finished 3-3.
The point preserved Roma’s 15-game unbeaten league run, which dates back to April. They remain third in the table.
“We maintained roles, positions and our way of playing,” said Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini. “The goals were of quality. We are fine with the result, with high morale. Balerdi knows football, has extraordinary energy and has been a great signing for us.”
Como backed up their Champions League victory over Manchester United with a 2-0 win against Sassuolo. Anastasios Douvikas scored twice in 11 minutes, and the result lifted Como to fourth in the table.
In the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund edged Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 at home to go top of the table. It was a hard-fought contest with few clear chances until the 80th minute.
Jobe Bellingham came off the bench and threaded a clever pass to fellow substitute Beier, who scored less than a minute later. It was Dortmund’s first league win since mid-September and put Niko Kovac’s side three points clear.
Bayern Munich can return to the top with a win at Freiburg on Sunday. They will be without coach Vincent Kompany, who is being treated in hospital for a mystery virus after collapsing at training on Friday.
Niclas Füllkrug scored for the sixth straight Bundesliga match as Werder Bremen won 3-2 at Mainz. The striker, back at Bremen on loan from West Ham, converted two penalties inside the opening 25 minutes. Ludovit Reis added the other Bremen goal, while Anthony Caci and Lee Jae-sung replied for the hosts.
RB Leipzig cruised to a 4-0 home win over promoted Elversberg, with Romulo scoring twice. Tidiam Gomis and Christoph Baumgartner also scored.
Paderborn’s Rayan Philippe scored in the 88th minute against his parent club Hamburg to give the promoted side a 1-0 victory. Augsburg drew 1-1 with Union Berlin, with both teams finishing with 10 men. Cologne and Schalke played out a goalless draw, a match marred by a head clash that forced Soufiane El-Faouzi off in the first half after a collision with Robin Gosens.
In La Liga, Atlético Madrid beat Deportivo A Coruña 1-0 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Julián Alvarez scored three minutes into the second half. Diego Simeone’s side extended their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions and moved within two points of leaders Barcelona, with El Clasico looming on Sunday.
Villarreal beat Valencia 2-1 in a derby that ended with both sides down to 10 men. Pepelu put Valencia ahead from the penalty spot before Alex Freeman headed the visitors level after 69 minutes.
Villarreal’s Pape Gueye was sent off for elbowing José Gayà in the face. Valencia’s Harvey Elliott, on loan from Liverpool, followed him off after two quick yellow cards for apparent dissent. Georges Mikautadze then raced through in stoppage time to finish with aplomb and claim the win. Javier Aguirre’s Valencia are 19th.
In France, Lens came from behind to beat Paris FC 2-1, with Thorgan Hazard’s 83rd-minute winner. They are now within a point of the Ligue 1 leaders.
Lens, last season’s runners-up, made a slow start and sacked coach Dino Toppmöller after six matches. Under Yannick Cahuzac they have won successive league games and have 13 points from eight matches. Five clubs share the lead on 14 points, including Paris FC.
