Archer and Bethell Return as England Name Squads for Australia Tour

adminCricket3 days ago25 Views

England are heading to Australia with a near full-strength look. Fast bowler Jofra Archer and batter Jacob Bethell have both been named in the ODI squad, and teenager Thomas Rew has earned a first full call-up for the T20s. The tour is a key step toward next year’s 50-over World Cup.

Archer and Bethell Back in the Frame

Archer, 31, was rested from the upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan, which also features Sri Lanka. The move was made to manage his workload after a busy home season.

Bethell’s return is just as significant. The 22-year-old missed the 2026 edition of the Hundred, the Test series against Pakistan and the white-ball clashes with Sri Lanka because of a right knee injury. He was also left out of the tri-series, which starts next week.

Now he has been passed fit for the three-match ODI campaign in Australia, which begins in Perth on November 13th.

Selector Marcus North Sets the Tone

England selector Marcus North said the returns of both players bring the side close to full strength as preparations for the World Cup ramp up.

“The returns of Jacob Bethell and Jofra Archer for the ODI series means that we will be at close to full strength as we ramp up preparations for a World Cup,” said North.

Archer and Bethell are the only two changes from the ODI squad travelling to Pakistan. Spinners James Coles and Mason Crane will leave the ODI group after Pakistan because of the change in conditions.

Pace Attack to Be Managed Carefully

England are already looking beyond the white-ball swing. The four quick bowlers, Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue, will leave after the three-game ODI series. The plan is to manage their workloads ahead of the Test tour of South Africa.

That gives the ODI leg a clear shape. England get a strong pace unit for the 50-over games in Australia, then rotate the group for the red-ball challenge ahead.

Buttler Still Sidelined

One notable absence remains. Wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler is still out with the hamstring injury he suffered in the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka. The same injury has kept him out of the tri-series.

Rew Gets His Big Moment in the T20s

The headline selection in the T20 group is Thomas Rew. At 18, he is the youngest player in the squad and has earned his first full England call-up for the five T20s in Australia that follow the ODIs.

Rew also has leadership experience. He captained England in their Under-19 World Cup final defeat by India in February.

Brook’s T20 Side Looking to Test Itself

North praised the T20 team’s recent form under captain Harry Brook. He said England are looking forward to testing themselves in Australian conditions against a very good team. North is a former Australia batter.

What It Means for the World Cup Build-Up

With Archer’s pace and Bethell’s batting back in the mix, England will have strong options in Perth. Australian conditions are a demanding test, and the ODI series offers valuable preparation for the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.

The squad balance also shows a clear plan. Senior names such as Joe Root and Adil Rashid anchor the ODI group, while the T20 side blends experience with fresh faces like Rew. If England can stay healthy, this tour could shape their World Cup thinking.
