Barcelona’s stranglehold on youth football’s biggest individual prize just got tighter. Lamine Yamal, still only 19, has been voted the 2026 Kopa Trophy winner, adding another landmark to a career already full of them. The announcement came on Monday and sent the award back to Camp Nou once again.
The Kopa Trophy honours the best footballer in the world under the age of 21. Yamal’s win follows his earlier back-to-back triumphs, and it cements his status as the most exciting teenager in the game.
It also means the trophy is heading to Barcelona for the fifth time in six years. Pedri and Gavi both won it before Yamal took over, creating a remarkable conveyor belt of talent from La Masia.
No club other than Barcelona has produced multiple winners since the award was first voted on in 2018. No country other than Spain has had more than one winner either.
Yamal is the only individual player with multiple wins. He is also one of just four players to land multiple podium appearances.

Many observers viewed another La Masia graduate, Pau Cubarsi, as the closest challenger this time. The young defender is going from strength to strength under Barcelona boss Hansi Flick.
He could pass 150 senior appearances before turning 20 in December. That is an extraordinary workload for a centre-back of his age.
Cubarsi has already collected back-to-back La Liga titles as one of Flick’s most trusted lieutenants. He followed Olympic gold in 2024 with a vital contribution to Spain’s World Cup win in 2026.
He also took home the Best Young Player award at the World Cup this summer. Even so, Yamal’s pull as the face of a new generation appears to have won out again.
The Kopa Trophy has had a strong list of winners since its debut. Kylian Mbappe claimed the inaugural award in 2018 after France’s World Cup triumph, demolishing the field in the process.
Matthijs de Ligt of Juventus won a year later by a smaller margin, ahead of Jadon Sancho and Joao Felix. England’s Jude Bellingham then took the 2023 prize while at Borussia Dortmund.
| Winner | Club / Context | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Kylian Mbappe | Inaugural winner after France’s World Cup win | 2018 |
| Matthijs de Ligt | Juventus | 2019 |
| Pedri and Gavi | Barcelona | Since 2021 |
| Jude Bellingham | Borussia Dortmund | 2023 |
| Lamine Yamal | Barcelona | 2026 |
The women’s side of the award has followed the same pattern. Barcelona’s Vicky Lopez, also from Spain, won the inaugural women’s Kopa Trophy last year.
Taken together, the results show how deep the talent pipeline runs in Catalonia. The rest of Europe is clearly still chasing.
For Barcelona, this is more than another piece of silverware for the cabinet. It is proof that the club’s youth model keeps delivering at the highest level.
With Yamal at 19 and Cubarsi still to turn 20, the next few years look bright. The big question is who, if anyone, can break the Barcelona run in future editions.
