Tilak Varma’s 25-Ball Fifty Fires India to Thrilling Win Over New Zealand

adminCricketYesterday22 Views

Tilak Varma turned a collapsing chase into a classic. With India reeling at 112-6, the middle-order star smashed a 25-ball fifty and, alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy, powered the visitors to a four-wicket win in Christchurch with a ball to spare. India now lead the series 2-0.

Tilak Varma Rescues India in Christchurch

India needed 68 off the last five overs, and the game looked to be slipping away. Then Varma took over.

He hit Jacob Duffy for two boundaries and punished Nathan Smith with three fours and a six. That brought India within 11 runs of victory with one over left.

Varma then crunched Duffy for four off the second ball of the final over to ease the pressure. Reddy sealed it with a shot down the ground at mid-on.

“The Hyderabadi boys were in play today… what everyone believed, I have done it, so I’m really proud of myself,” said player-of-the-match Varma.

A 69-Run Stand That Changed Everything

Varma and Reddy added 69 runs off just 30 balls for the seventh wicket. Varma finished on 51, while Reddy contributed a calm and aggressive 26.

The pair went after the pacers in the final three overs, and New Zealand had no answer.

Santner’s Spell Shakes India

It could have been very different. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner produced a destructive spell of 4-21 that left India badly shaken.

He removed opener Abhishek Sharma (27) and then bowled India captain Shreyas Iyer (7) with a flighted delivery. Naman Dhir’s quick 31 off 17 balls ended when Santner had him caught at extra cover, leaving India on 112-6 in the 15th over.

The Catch That Stunned the Crowd

Two balls after Iyer’s dismissal, Axar Patel nearly cleared the long-on boundary. Finn Allen jumped to catch it over his shoulder and tossed it to Daryl Mitchell before landing over the rope. It was a stunning piece of fielding that tilted the momentum toward the hosts.

Phillips and Jacobs Rebuild New Zealand

The Christchurch pitch played slower than in Thursday’s high-scoring contest. India’s pacers exploited it and restricted New Zealand to 43-3 in the powerplay.

Glenn Phillips (70) and Bevon Jacobs (58) then turned the innings around with a 116-run stand for the fourth wicket. Phillips hit four fours and four sixes for his second straight fifty before Arshdeep Singh (2-33) got him caught near the fence.

Michael Bracewell added a cameo of 10 off two balls to lift the hosts to 180-5.

Shaky Start for India

India’s reply began poorly. Sanju Samson (14) played out a maiden in the first over before edging Duffy’s slower ball to point. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who replaced the injured Ishan Kishan, fell for four to Smith.

Iyer Praises Team Character

Iyer credited the team’s belief after a tense finish.

“I feel every individual in our team is a match-winner … we thought the game was going away from us, but Tilak and Nitish showed immense character,” said the India captain.

What’s Next for the Series

India now hold a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. They can seal it with a win at Wellington on Tuesday.

New Zealand will take heart from Santner’s spell and the Phillips-Jacobs partnership. But with Varma in this form, India look dangerous in any chase.
