Rohit Sharma has stirred the retirement debate again. Asked on a TV show to pick between Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, he dodged the choice and dropped a line about a T20I comeback after the 2027 World Cup. It was a joke, but it said plenty.
Television actor Shehzada Dhami set up the moment as a game on the show ‘Family Full House with Rohit Sharma’. He asked who Rohit would call in an emergency: Shreyas Iyer or Shubman Gill.
Rohit refused to separate them. Both men currently captain India in different formats, and he played it with a smile.
“Oh my. Both are captains of India currently. Gill is currently my captain. I have to play in the ’27 World Cup. I have to keep him happy.”
Then came the line that got fans talking. “After ’27, need to make a comeback in T20, so have to keep Shreyas happy as well,” Rohit added.
It was plainly a joke, though perhaps not entirely one. Nobody should read it as a formal selection pitch.
Rohit has not played a T20I since lifting the World Cup in Barbados in June 2024. He walked away from the format on the night India won it.
His Test retirement followed in May 2025. That leaves ODIs as the only format he plays, with the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia as his stated target.
| Milestone | Detail |
|---|---|
| T20I retirement | June 2024, after the World Cup win in Barbados |
| Test retirement | May 2025 |
| Current format | ODIs only |
| Stated target | 2027 ODI World Cup (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia) |
| Age at end of 2027 tournament | 40 |
| Age at 2028 T20 World Cup | 41 |
The 2027 World Cup runs into November 2027, by which point Rohit will be 40. The next T20 World Cup arrives in 2028, when he would be 41.
By then he would be close to four years removed from his last T20I. That is a huge gap for any international player.
The T20I team has also moved on. Iyer took the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav after India retained the title earlier this year.
The side he leads in New Zealand is built around Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Naman Dhir. India has spent two years assembling a group designed to move past Rohit’s generation.
What stands out is that Rohit reached for 2028 at all. The conversation around him for months has focused on when he stops rather than what he does next.
Reports at one stage claimed he would retire after an ODI in the England series. The arrival of Pragyan Ojha as chief selector has only sharpened the question of how long the BCCI will carry him.
A player quietly planning his exit does not float a comeback in a format he left two years ago, even in jest. Rohit still seems to treat the 2027 World Cup as a destination rather than a farewell.
Whether the selectors see it the same way is another matter. Only a heavy run of scores in South Africa would force anyone to reopen the T20I question.
For now, it remains a throwaway line from a relaxed TV show. But for fans who are not ready to say goodbye, it was a line worth hearing, even if the comeback never happens.
