Ahmadzai’s Blitz Rescues Afghanistan as Zimbabwe Fall by 37 Runs in Sharjah

Afghanistan stared at 31 for 3, then flipped the script in Sharjah. Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai’s blistering 51 off 20 balls, backed by Shahidullah Kamal’s steady 46 and a Rashid Khan blitz, powered the Blue Tigers to a 37-run win over Zimbabwe in the series-opening T20I.

Afghanistan Survive a Powerplay Scare

The opening T20I of the UAE series, played on October 27, 2026, began badly for Afghanistan. Three wickets fell inside the powerplay, leaving them at 31 for 3 and in real danger of a modest total.

The innings crawled early on. Afghanistan needed 9.3 overs just to reach 50, and the top order had left plenty of work for the middle order.

Team Score Overs
Afghanistan 177 all out 19.5
Zimbabwe 140 all out 19.1
Result: Afghanistan won by 37 runs and lead the series 1-0

Ahmadzai Turns the Match on Its Head

Ahmadzai walked in with the top order in ruins and played with total freedom. He hit 51 off just 20 balls, with four fours and four sixes, and the momentum shifted straight away.

That knock was the turning point of the contest. It took the pressure off Afghanistan and put it back on Zimbabwe’s bowlers.

A 50-Run Stand Off 24 Balls

Ahmadzai and Kamal put together a rapid 50-run partnership off only 24 balls. Ahmadzai contributed 37 of those runs and Kamal added 12, which gave Afghanistan the platform they badly needed.

Afghanistan crossed 100 in 14.1 overs. They then passed 150 in 17.5 overs as the innings accelerated through the middle and closing stages.

Kamal Anchors, Rashid Finishes

Kamal gave the innings its backbone with 46 off 42 balls, including two fours and three sixes. His steadiness complemented Ahmadzai’s aggression and kept the innings together while others attacked.

Rashid Khan then took over at the death. He smashed 30 off 10 balls with one four and four sixes, and Afghanistan were bowled out for 177 with one delivery of the innings remaining.

Zimbabwe’s Chase Unravels

Chasing 178, Zimbabwe made a composed start and reached 38 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. For a while the target looked gettable.

Afghanistan’s bowlers then squeezed the middle overs and wickets fell at regular intervals. Zimbabwe slipped to 56 for 3 by the 9.3-over mark, and the required rate began to climb.

Pressure Does the Damage

Zimbabwe reached 100 in 14.4 overs, but by then the asking rate had grown steep. Further wickets fell and the chase never found real momentum.

Afghanistan held their nerve in the closing stages. Zimbabwe were dismissed for 140 in 19.1 overs, which sealed the 37-run win.

Rashid Delivers With Bat and Ball

Rashid backed up his 10-ball cameo by taking two wickets, so his impact came in both innings. Ahmadzai’s half-century was still the decisive contribution, and it gave Afghanistan the early series lead.

What It Means for the Series

Afghanistan showed they can recover from a collapse and still post a competitive total. The 1-0 lead puts Zimbabwe under pressure to respond quickly.

Zimbabwe will take some positives from their powerplay, but the middle-overs slide proved costly. The next T20I in the UAE should show whether they can fix it.
