Bangladesh Women’s Team Sets Ambitious Goals for Asia Cup

The Bangladesh women’s cricket team is aiming high as they prepare for the upcoming Asia Cup scheduled to kick off in Dubai on August 28. Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty expressed their determination to not just reach the semi-finals but to break through to the final. After several seasons of coming close yet falling short, the team’s focus is on achieving a significant milestone this time.

“Our main target this time is to play in the final. We have played in the semi-finals before and then been knocked out. The same thing has happened repeatedly, so we want to break that barrier this time,” Joty stated during a press gathering following an official photo session on Monday.

Bangladesh’s journey in the Asia Cup starts against Indonesia on August 31, followed by critical matches against Sri Lanka on September 6, and the UAE on September 8. Joty emphasized the importance of the group-stage matches, noting that success could secure a more favorable path in the knockout stage.

The Strategy to Avoid Tough Matchups

Joty highlighted, “The group-stage matches are very important because if we can become group champions, we will not have to face India in the semi-final. The situation becomes much tougher when we face India in the semi-finals.” This insightful strategy reveals the necessity for a strong performance right from the get-go.

Solid Preparations for a Tough Tournament

According to Joty, the team has benefitted from extensive preparations, which included practice matches in Sri Lanka, allowing them to acclimatize to conditions they will encounter during the tournament. “Our preparation has been very good because we have played quite a few practice matches this time. Preparation-wise, I think it has been very good,” she remarked.

Momentum for the Asian Games Ahead

The skipper is also confident that their performance in the Asia Cup can build momentum for the subsequent Asian Games in Japan. “If we can play the Asia Cup in a better way, it will also create a big opportunity for us in the Asian Games,” Joty explained. A successful campaign in the Asia Cup could indeed bolster their chances at the Asian Games, where they are aiming for nothing short of a medal.

Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team has a rich history in the Asian Games, previously winning silver in 2010 and bronze in 2022. Joty stated emphatically, “First comes the Asia Cup… if we can adapt to the conditions and play better cricket, we will have a good chance of doing well in both tournaments.”
