Burnley have made their move. Just four days after parting with Nicky Hayen, the club has appointed Swiss tactician Fabio Celestini as head coach. With the team stuck in the Championship relegation zone, the 50-year-old arrives with a big job on his hands and almost no time to settle in.
Burnley confirmed the news after sacking Hayen earlier this week. The club has not disclosed the length of Celestini’s contract.
The pressure is obvious. Following relegation from the Premier League, Burnley have won just one of their 12 league games this season. That leaves them 22nd in the Championship and in need of a quick response.

Celestini is a former Switzerland midfielder who won 35 caps for his country. He spent 10 years as a player in France and Spain before moving into management.
His coaching career has taken him across Swiss football and beyond. He has managed Lugano, Luzern, Sion and Basel. His most recent job was at CSKA Moscow, which he left in May this year.
The Basel chapter is the one Burnley will be most excited about. Celestini took the club from the bottom of the table to a league and cup double in just 18 months.
That record of fixing a struggling side is exactly what Burnley need right now. The club’s statement said he “arrives with a proven capacity to win and to adapt to different football environments.”
Chief football officer Diego López, himself a new name at Burnley this week, was quick to back the appointment. He said: “Fabio brings the passion, experience and knowledge we were looking for. He showed extraordinary determination and conviction to come to Burnley.”
López also stressed the importance of commitment. “We want people who truly want to be here and help this club grow. Fabio is a clear example of that.”
The new head coach was upbeat when speaking to Burnley’s website. He said he sees “a club with big potential and players with real quality, who can help us achieve our supporters’ ambitions.”
He also showed he understands the scale of the challenge. “I know the situation we are in, and I have lived it before. Our supporters deserve to see a team playing with belief from the first whistle.”
There is no easing in period. Celestini will take charge of his first match in Saturday’s home league game against Portsmouth.
That gives him only a few days to meet the squad and set out his ideas. The Turf Moor crowd will be hoping for an immediate lift after a difficult start to the campaign.
Burnley have gone for experience, a record of rescuing teams and a manager who says he wants to be there. Whether that blend can lift them from 22nd place remains to be seen.
The first test comes on Saturday. For a club that has won only once in 12 league games, a strong start against Portsmouth would be a big statement.
