Head fires Australia to ODI series win over Zimbabwe

Australia wrapped up the ODI series in style on Friday, cruising to an 84-run win over Zimbabwe in Harare behind a blistering Travis Head century. With one match still to play, the visitors have already secured an unassailable 2-0 lead and sent a clear message with a dominant batting display and a disciplined bowling response.

Head sets the tone with explosive century

Put in to bat first, Australia wasted little time taking control. Head delivered the innings-defining knock, smashing 112 off 84 balls as the visitors surged to 356 for 6, their highest ODI total against Zimbabwe. His innings mixed clean timing with ruthless intent, and he anchored the top order’s charge from the opening overs.

Captain Mitchell Marsh played the perfect supporting role at the top, surviving an early scare after being dropped first ball before making 53 from 63 deliveries. Together, the pair piled on 130 for the opening wicket and immediately put Zimbabwe under pressure.

Connolly and Peake add the finishing blow

Head then kept the tempo high alongside Cooper Connolly, who continued his strong run with 78 off 69 balls. Their 60-run stand for the second wicket ensured Australia never lost momentum, even as Zimbabwe searched for a way back into the contest.

The late overs brought even more damage. Twenty-year-old Ollie Peake provided a brutal finish, blasting an unbeaten 41 from just 18 balls, including three sixes in the final over. Zimbabwe pacer Brad Evans was taken apart at the death, finishing with three wickets but conceding 86 runs in a punishing nine-over spell.

Zimbabwe struggle to match the asking rate

Zimbabwe’s chase never truly got going. They reached 50 runs only after 14 overs, a sign of the pressure Australia’s attack was applying from the start. The hosts showed brief resistance through captain Sikandar Raza, who top-scored with 45, and veteran Brendan Taylor, who made 39 in another landmark appearance.

Australia’s attack spread the damage efficiently. Adam Zampa returned figures of 2 for 62 and also moved past 200 wickets in ODI cricket, another milestone in a steadily growing international record. Josh Hazlewood, returning from injury, also impressed with 2 for 48 in nine overs.

The wickets were shared across the bowling group, and Australia remained in control even after losing Billy Stanlake to injury during the match. Marsh praised the depth of the squad after the game, saying the team delivered a “complete performance” and that the bowlers stepped up when needed.

“It was a complete performance from the boys,” Marsh said. “When Big Billy went down, our part-time bowlers stepped in.”

Australia’s momentum keeps building

The result follows Australia’s 59-run win in the opening match on Tuesday, giving them two commanding victories in a row. With the series already sealed, the final ODI on Sunday offers Australia a chance to complete a clean sweep, while Zimbabwe will be left searching for answers after being outplayed in both departments.

Australia will then turn their attention to South Africa, where another three-match series begins in Durban next Tuesday. For now, though, this performance in Harare will stand out as a statement win, powered by Head’s aggression, Marsh’s leadership, Connolly’s consistency, and a bowling attack that kept Zimbabwe firmly in check.
