West Indies were bundled out for 104 in 31.5 overs, with Jason Holder top-scoring on 25. But India’s chase was even more ruthless.

Shikhar Dhawan fell early, but Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made sure there was no recovery. Kohli remained unbeaten on 33 off 29 balls, while Rohit struck an unbeaten 63 off 56, including five fours and four sixes.

January 2023: a record-breaking night against Sri Lanka

If the 2018 game was about efficiency, the 2023 ODI against Sri Lanka was about total domination. India produced a complete performance that became the biggest ODI victory in their history at the time.

Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill were at the heart of the batting masterclass. Kohli smashed 166 off 110 balls, while Gill added a fluent 116 off 97, as India raced to 390/5. Rohit Sharma contributed 42 off 49 balls, and Shreyas Iyer chipped in with 38 off 32.

The bowling effort was just as destructive. Mohammed Siraj finished with 4/32 from 10 overs, while Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets each. Sri Lanka were dismissed for only 73 in 22 overs.

That victory was not only India’s biggest ODI win at the venue, but also the biggest ODI win overall until England later beat South Africa by 342 runs in Southampton.

What the numbers say before the 2026 clash

For India, the numbers at Trivandrum are short, sharp, and encouraging. Two ODIs, two wins, and two commanding performances. The venue has already seen a run-fest, a demolition, and several senior Indian batters in strong touch.

For West Indies, the challenge is obvious. They were India’s first ODI opponent here and were beaten heavily in 2018. Now they return to a ground where India have looked comfortable in both conditions and pressure situations.
