Ishan Kishan needed just six runs, and only four deliveries, to etch his name into the record books. In the fifth T20I against New Zealand at Seddon Park, the left-hander went past Suryakumar Yadav to become India’s leading T20I run-scorer in a calendar year, capping a dramatic turnaround after a tough series.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to bowl in the series finale at Seddon Park on Sunday, November 1. Both teams made changes to their playing XIs for the decider.
Kishan began his innings needing six runs to pass Suryakumar’s 2022 tally of 1,164 runs in 31 matches. He got there with his fourth delivery, moving to 1,165* in 37 matches in 2026.
| Player | Matches | Innings | Runs | Best Score | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ishan Kishan | 37 | 36 | 1,165* | 103 | 2026 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 31 | 31 | 1,164 | 117 | 2022 |
| Abhishek Sharma | 39 | 38 | 1,153* | 113 | 2026 |
| Abhishek Sharma | 21 | 21 | 859 | 135 | 2025 |
| Sanju Samson | 30 | 29 | 809* | 97* | 2026 |
| Virat Kohli | 20 | 20 | 781 | 122* | 2022 |
Abhishek Sharma features twice on the list, with 1,153* in 2026 and 859 in 2025. The 2026 calendar year has clearly belonged to India’s aggressive top order.
New Zealand struck early after choosing to bowl, removing both Indian openers inside the first four overs. Abhishek Sharma fell cheaply to Adam Milne, and Sanju Samson departed for four off 10 balls.
India were 19/2 after 3.1 overs, and the pressure was firmly on the middle order.
Kishan and Shreyas Iyer answered with intent. The pair lifted the scoring rate and pushed the New Zealand bowlers back on the defensive.
The fifth over proved costly, as the duo took 16 runs off Nathan Smith. Blair Tickner then conceded 13 in the sixth, including a six from Kishan off the first delivery.
| Powerplay Snapshot | Value |
|---|---|
| India score after 6 overs | 50/2 |
| Run rate | 8.33 per over |
| Runs off Nathan Smith (5th over) | 16 |
| Runs off Blair Tickner (6th over) | 13 |
The milestone makes the story even bigger given how Kishan’s series had unfolded. He managed just one run across his first two innings against New Zealand, with a groin injury disrupting his campaign.
Kishan suffered a low-grade right adductor strain while fielding during the series opener at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22. He scored only one run before being dismissed.
The injury ruled him out of the second and third T20Is, played on October 24 and 27. He worked with the medical team on rehabilitation while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi replaced him in the playing XI.
After clearing precautionary fitness tests, Kishan returned for the fourth T20I at Eden Park in Auckland on October 30. He was dismissed for a duck in India’s 87-run defeat.
Just two days later, the wicketkeeper-batter flipped the script completely, taking only four balls to claim the record in Hamilton.
| Player | Matches | Innings | Runs | Best Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ishan Kishan | 37 | 36 | 1,165* | 103 |
| Abhishek Sharma | 39 | 38 | 1,153* | 113 |
| Sanju Samson | 30 | 29 | 809* | 97* |
| Tilak Varma | 35 | 33 | 751 | 160* |
| Shreyas Iyer | 26 | 25 | 666 | 102* |
| Shivam Dube | 32 | 25 | 539 | 66 |
Suryakumar’s 2022 mark stood as the benchmark for India’s T20I run-scoring in a single year. Kishan has now moved clear of it, and he did so with a best score of 103 in 2026.
With Abhishek Sharma just behind him in the same year, the debate over India’s most explosive T20I batter of 2026 is far from settled. For Kishan, though, the story is one of resilience: from injury and a duck to a record on the Hamilton stage.
