Mushfiqur Rahim Ruled Out of First Test Against West Indies With Finger Injury

adminCricketYesterday33 Views

Bangladesh have lost a key batting pillar before a ball was bowled. Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim has been ruled out of the first Test against West Indies in Mirpur after a nets bouncer struck his finger. The good news is that the setback looks short-lived.

Nets Bouncer Changes Bangladesh’s Plans

The incident happened on Tuesday morning at the BCB Academy. A bouncer hit Mushfiqur’s right index finger while he was batting in the nets. He cut his session short and left the ground with the finger taped.

The real concern came on Wednesday morning. Mushfiqur felt pain while trying to put on his wicketkeeping gloves. With the series opener at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium starting on October 28, 2026, team management decided he was not fit to play.

For a 38-year-old who has played 106 Tests and is Bangladesh’s highest run-scorer in the format, it is a big absence. Towhid Hridoy has been included in the XI as his replacement.

X-Ray Brings Some Relief

An X-ray on Wednesday showed no tear in the finger. The injury has been classified as a contusion, which points to a short recovery window rather than extended rest or surgery.

What the Physio Said

Bangladesh team physiotherapist Bayjedul Islam Khan addressed the media to explain the injury and the expected timeline. His message was clear and fairly upbeat.

“He sustained an injury to his right index finger during practice yesterday. He remained under observation, but there had not been sufficient improvement by this morning. It is a contusion injury, and we hope he will recover within the next three days. He will be available for the next Test,” Bayjedul Islam said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

That puts Mushfiqur on course for the second Test in Sylhet, which begins on November 5.

A Repeat Absence Against the Same Opponent

This is not the first time injury has kept Mushfiqur out against West Indies. He also missed Bangladesh’s last Test against them, on the 2024 Caribbean tour, so this is a second straight absence against the same opposition.

Shanto Wins Toss and Bats First

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat. He felt the pitch looked good for batting early and would turn later in the match. The hosts have gone with three spinners, two seamers and all-rounders.

“We will bat first, looks like a pretty good pitch and will spin later,” Shanto said.

Shanto also stressed the need for big partnerships, saying the opening stand in the previous Test was encouraging. With Mushfiqur missing, the middle order will be asked to step up and build those long stands.

One Match at a Time

Shanto said the squad is not looking too far ahead in the World Test Championship cycle. The focus is on small targets and trusting the process.

The WTC Stakes Are Real

This two-match series is significant for Bangladesh’s 2025-27 World Test Championship campaign. It is part of their remaining six Tests in the cycle, and they currently sit fourth in the standings.

To reach the WTC final for the first time, Bangladesh need four wins and at least one draw from those six matches. Every Test now carries weight, and every absence is felt.

Key Numbers at a Glance

Stat Detail

Mushfiqur’s Test caps 106
Last Test score (vs Afghanistan, Abu Dhabi) 81 runs
Expected recovery time 3 days
Second Test start date November 5, Sylhet
Bangladesh’s WTC position 4th
Remaining WTC Tests 6
Needed for WTC final 4 wins and at least 1 draw

Why His Absence Stings

Mushfiqur arrives on the sidelines in good touch. In his previous Test, against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi earlier in October 2026, he scored 81 runs. That innings underlined how important he remains to Bangladesh’s batting at the highest level.

His experience behind the stumps and in the middle order is hard to replace. Hridoy now has a chance to make a case, while Bangladesh wait for their senior man to heal.

What Comes Next

If recovery goes to plan, Mushfiqur will be back for Sylhet with the series still alive. For now, Bangladesh must manage the opener without him and begin their WTC push with a fresh face in the lineup.
