Parthiv Patel Reveals RCB Snubbed Bumrah Tip in 2014

Parthiv Patel has opened a fascinating window into one of the IPL’s biggest auction what-ifs. The former India wicketkeeper-batter revealed that he urged Royal Challengers Bengaluru to go after a young Jasprit Bumrah during the 2014 mega auction, but the franchise did not act on the advice.

The story adds another layer to Bumrah’s rise from promising pacer to one of the most feared bowlers in the league. It also underlines how small calls at an auction table can shape years of outcomes for both a player and a franchise.

Parthiv’s suggestion came during the 2014 auction

Speaking on Aakash Chopra’s podcast, Parthiv said he was already with RCB during the auction and tried to point the management toward Bumrah when the young bowler was still available. According to him, the timing was around lunch on the first day of the auction, shortly after he had been picked up by the franchise.

Parthiv recalled that he immediately noticed Bumrah’s name in the pool and felt the youngster deserved attention. “I had recommended Jasprit Bumrah to RCB in 2014,” Parthiv said, explaining that he tried to alert the team when he saw the pacer available.

RCB did not share the same view

That recommendation, however, did not go far. Parthiv said the response from the RCB camp made it clear they were not convinced Bumrah was worth pursuing at that stage of the auction.

He described the reaction in candid terms, saying the message he received suggested the franchise did not see immediate value in buying the pacer. In Parthiv’s words, the reply was dismissive enough to shut the conversation down quickly.

“They didn’t think that he could be worth buying at that stage,” Parthiv said, adding that the response was effectively, “yeh Bumrah-wumrah kya kar lenge.”

Mumbai Indians seized the opportunity

While RCB let the moment pass, Mumbai Indians made the move that would later look inspired. Bumrah was signed by MI for ₹1.20 crore at the same auction, despite interest from Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals as well.

That deal proved to be one of the defining bargains of the IPL era. Bumrah went on to become a cornerstone of Mumbai’s attack, delivering with pace, accuracy and a deadly yorker that changed games in the death overs.

Auction price in 2014 ₹1.20 crore

Why the miss still matters

In hindsight, RCB’s decision has become one of the franchise’s most discussed auction misses. Bumrah has since built a reputation as one of the finest fast bowlers in the format and has played a huge role in Mumbai Indians’ success across multiple seasons.

The numbers only deepen the regret. With 187 wickets in 158 matches and an economy rate of 7.33, Bumrah has offered elite value in a format where dependable bowling is often harder to find than explosive batting.

As one former franchise insider and analyst noted in similar discussions, auctions are often judged years later, not minutes after the hammer falls. This case is a perfect example of how quickly a scouting call can become a headline-making miss.

Parthiv’s RCB connection remains complicated

The revelation also reflects Parthiv’s mixed but memorable association with RCB. He has spoken before about the emotional connection he still feels toward the team, even though not every chapter ended smoothly.

His account serves as a reminder that IPL auctions are part instinct, part data, and part timing. In 2014, one suggestion was overlooked, one franchise hesitated, and another franchise walked away with a bowler who would go on to reshape matches for years.

For RCB fans, the Bumrah storyline will likely remain one of those painful alternate histories. For Mumbai Indians, it stands as another example of a move that looked smart then and looks even smarter now.
