Saransh Jain Debuts for India in Crucial Test

In a historic moment for Indian cricket, Saransh Jain has been included in the Playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on August 23, 2026. This match marks the second and final clash of the two-match Test series.

India enters this encounter with a significant advantage, having clinched the first Test in Galle by a commanding 165 runs, thereby taking a 1-0 lead in the series. This series is particularly vital as it is India’s first in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, aiming to recover after a disappointing 2-0 home defeat against South Africa last November.

India’s Position in the World Test Championship

As the second Test unfolds, India sits fifth in the WTC standings, while Sri Lanka is just behind in sixth place. The stakes are high, and both teams are looking to solidify their positions. With the backdrop of this competitive scenario, Jain’s debut could be pivotal in shaping the outcome of the series.

Kuldeep Yadav’s Absence

In a notable twist, India’s team composition has altered as Kuldeep Yadav has not been deemed fit to participate due to a viral illness. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed his unavailability in a statement, indicating that Kuldeep could potentially act as a concussion substitute if required.

“Mr Kuldeep Yadav has not fully recovered from his viral illness. He was unavailable for selection in the Playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka,” stated the BCCI.

Although he has shown commendable performances in previous matches, his outing in the first Test saw him struggling. Kuldeep bowled 25 overs, conceding 103 runs and claiming only one wicket, while debutant Manav Suthar took a remarkable 10-wicket haul.

Saransh Jain’s Journey to the National Team

Saransh Jain, born on March 31, 1993, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, is a right-arm off-spinner and left-handed batter. He has garnered attention through consistent performances for Madhya Pradesh, where he made his first-class debut in the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy. With impressive stats of 188 wickets and 2,223 runs in 54 matches, Jain’s skills have shone brightly. His standout performance during the recent India A tour in Sri Lanka, where he scored an unbeaten 70 and took six wickets, further bolstered his case for a national selection.
