Starc Wrecks South Africa With 6/72 and Tops Warne’s Newlands Record

Mitchell Starc turned a grinding day at Newlands into a collapse for the ages. South Africa raced to 158 without loss, then lost all ten wickets for 172 runs. Starc finished with 6/72, the best figures by an Australian at the ground, eclipsing Shane Warne.

South Africa’s Dream Start Slips Away

Aiden Markram and Marques Ackerman put on 158 for the first wicket after Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to field. For two sessions, that decision looked costly. The surface gave Australia almost nothing.

Ackerman was stumped for 95 charging Nathan Lyon. Markram pulled Josh Hazlewood to long leg for 78. The innings never properly recovered its footing from there.

It was one of the toughest days Cummins has had as captain. He went wicketless across 18 overs, and the toss call was picked over all afternoon.

Starc Strikes in Bursts

Then Starc took over. He claimed two wickets in an over on three separate occasions across the day, and each burst dragged Australia back into the contest.

The Ball That Changed the Day

Marco Jansen had made 52 and shared 95 with Ryan Rickelton when Starc produced the delivery that mattered most. A full inswinger landed just outside off and knocked out the gap between bat and pad.

It drew immediate comparisons with the ball that bowled Brendon McCullum in the 2015 World Cup final. South Africa were 325 for 6 at that point, and the new ball was barely out of its wrapper.

Four Wickets in Six Balls

What followed was absurd. Gerald Coetzee was bowled first ball by an inswinger that deflected off the pad into leg stump. Kagiso Rabada went lbw for a two-ball duck.

Four wickets fell in the final six deliveries of Starc’s spell, with a leg bye the only run conceded in between. South Africa lost their last four wickets for five runs in the space of three overs.

Passing a Name That Takes Some Passing

Starc’s 6/72 is now the best return by an Australian bowler in a Test at Newlands. It goes past Shane Warne’s 6/161 from 2002, a mark that had stood for 24 years.

The two spells could hardly look more different. Warne’s came across an innings of toil. Starc’s arrived in a late burst at the end of a long day.

Stat Value
Starc’s figures 6/72
Warne’s previous best at Newlands (2002) 6/161
Starc’s Test five-wicket hauls 20
South Africa’s opening stand 158
South Africa’s final total 330
Runs added for last four wickets 5

It was also Starc’s 20th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. West Indies great Ian Bishop was quick to applaud from the commentary box.

“Mitch Starc is a machine, especially with a new ball. One of the greats. 20 by 5 wkt hauls,” Bishop tweeted.

Starc Isn’t Fully Satisfied

Even after a spell like this, Starc was candid about his series. He had found almost no swing in the first two Tests, and he did not pretend the problem was solved.

“A lot of things haven’t felt right through the series,” he said at stumps. “We have been around long enough to problem solve as we go.”

He added that the experience in the attack was what allowed Australia to work their way out of trouble. That veteran steadiness showed when the day looked to be slipping away.

A Series Decider Wide Open

South Africa will still feel 330 is a competitive first-innings total in a series decider. They won in Gqeberha from considerably further behind, so they know what a fightback looks like.

What they will not enjoy is how this innings ended. They had 158 on the board without losing a wicket and still found a way to lose all ten.

Australia now have the momentum, and a bowler who has finally found his rhythm at the perfect moment. The toss debate is over. The real fight for the series starts now.
