Zimbabwe Name ODI Squad for Australia Series

Zimbabwe have turned to experience and flexibility as they announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The three-match contest, set for Harare Sports Club, brings together returning veterans, a new captain, and a few notable absentees as the hosts prepare for a demanding assignment.

Raza handed captaincy as Zimbabwe reshape the unit

Sikandar Raza will lead the side in place of regular ODI captain Richard Ngarava, who is still recovering from a lower-back injury. Zimbabwe’s selection reflects a balancing act between continuity and availability, with the team leaning on all-round depth and proven international experience.

The squad includes Ben Curran, Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, Brian Bennett, Craig Ervine, Ernest Masuku, Innocent Kaia, Newman Nyamhuri, Ryan Burl, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Wellington Masakadza and Wessly Madhevere, giving Zimbabwe a mix of youth, pace, spin and batting options.

A Zimbabwe Cricket insider said the approach was shaped by both form and fitness, noting that “the Australia series is as much about competitiveness as it is about building combinations for the road ahead.”

Big returns for Cremer and Taylor

One of the most eye-catching selections is the return of Graeme Cremer, the former captain who last played an ODI in 2018. The leg-spinner has already re-entered Zimbabwe’s white-ball picture in recent months, featuring in the T20I setup, the T20 World Cup and the Namibia tri-series.

Cremer’s only ODI appearance against Australia came during the 2011 World Cup, making this comeback particularly notable as Zimbabwe prepare to meet a side that has long tested them in the 50-over format. His presence adds both control and experience to the bowling attack.

Brendan Taylor is the other major returning name. The 40-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, one of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished ODI players, came back into the side for two ODIs against Sri Lanka in 2025 after a four-year absence. He remains Zimbabwe’s second-highest ODI run-scorer and is only 81 runs away from surpassing Andy Flower’s long-standing national record.

Selection calls show the depth of the challenge

Zimbabwe will also have Tadiwanashe Marumani available as a keeping option, while Clive Madande has missed out after featuring in the previous ODI series against Bangladesh in July. The omission suggests that Zimbabwe are prioritising a combination of current form and specific role balance for the Australia challenge.

The squad is also missing Tanaka Chivanga, who is sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury. Along with Ngarava’s absence, that removes two important pace options from the group and places even more responsibility on the fit quicks in the lineup.

For Zimbabwe, the series arrives at an important moment. Australia’s depth and consistency make them formidable opponents, but home conditions in Harare and the return of seasoned campaigners could give the hosts a fighting chance to stay competitive.

Harare set for a rare ODI visitor

The last time Zimbabwe hosted Australia in an ODI was back in 2014, when the two sides played in a triangular series that also included South Africa. More than a decade later, the fixture carries added intrigue, not just because of the opposition, but because of the storylines inside Zimbabwe’s own dressing room.

The matches will be played on 15, 18 and 20 September, all at Harare Sports Club. With Raza at the helm, Cremer back in national colours and Taylor chasing history, Zimbabwe’s squad announcement has already injected extra energy into the series build-up.

The selection now puts the spotlight on how Zimbabwe’s returning names respond against elite opposition. If Taylor gets close to the record and the bowling unit holds its shape, the series could become far more competitive than many expect.
