Jordan Cox Set to Shine at No. 3 for England in First Test

As England prepares to face Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley, all eyes will be on Jordan Cox as he steps up to bat at No. 3. The Kent batter’s journey is not just about talent, but also the invaluable advice he received from cricketing legend Virat Kohli during IPL 2026.

Cox’s Big Opportunity

After Jacob Bethell was ruled out due to a right knee injury, Cox has found himself on the front lines of the Test match landscape. With selectors backing him for at least the opening two Tests, this is a pivotal moment in Cox’s career. His elevation to a crucial batting position comes as a significant leap from his previous role as a number seven. Despite a limited first-class record at No. 3, Cox is determined to embrace the challenge.

Inspiration from Virat Kohli

Cox’s stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore offered him not just high-pressure matches but also mentorship from one of the game’s greatest minds. During their conversations, Kohli emphasized the importance of resilience and maintaining a balanced attitude between aggression on the field and humility off it.

Reflecting on his hurdles, particularly a painful broken finger that sidelined him from a 2024 Test debut, Cox recalls, “I had that Test cap right there, then I couldn’t get it. It felt like that was the end, as bad as that sounds. Virat said, ‘there are billions of people who don’t even know who I am. The sun will come in the morning’. He’s crazy on the field, but he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll meet off it. It’s about being aggressive on the field, then being a great bloke off it. That advice stays with me, and I know I can reach out to him when I need support.”

Preparing with Joe Root

Cox’s preparations became more focused with Joe Root returning as England’s Test captain. The chance to work alongside Root during The Men’s Hundred allowed Cox to deepen their relationship, providing a unique platform for discussion on both cricket and life. “It’s weird coming into this environment and getting to know people. Spending three-and-a-half weeks with Joe, batting together in the nets and discussing cricket has been awesome,” said Cox, highlighting how invaluable this mentorship has become.

A New Chapter for England

This Test series marks a new chapter for England, particularly as they transition following the retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket. With Marcus Trescothick stepping in as interim coach and Stephen Fleming poised to take the reins in December ahead of the South Africa tour, the stakes are high for the team. Cox also praised the encouragement he received from National Selector Marcus North, who urged him to stick to his game. “Marcus North called me and said, ‘don’t change the way you’ve been playing in county cricket. Go and embrace the challenge and have fun’. That’s what I’m aiming for,” Cox stated with palpable enthusiasm.

As the first Test approaches, anticipation builds not just for the match but for what Jordan Cox will bring to the team. Will his combination of Kohli’s wisdom and Root’s guidance be enough to propel England to success? Fans are eager to find out.
