The Hundred 2026 has officially wrapped up, and the air is buzzing with excitement and speculation. With major ownership changes sweeping across teams, the future of The Hundred is looking bright. Now, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ownership group is setting its sights on joining this dynamic format. As interest grows and the competition potentially expands, what does this mean for cricket fans?
This season marked a significant shift in team ownership. Notably, IPL team owners are now involved, leading to name changes that reflect their new leadership. For instance, the Lucknow Super Giants’ ownership group has claimed the Manchester Super Giants, and MI London has its roots as the former Oval Invincibles, now partly owned by Reliance Industries Limited, the same owners behind Mumbai Indians.
Meanwhile, the Sunrisers Leeds is back under the Sun TV Network’s stewardship, and Southern Brave has GMR Group in its corner, known for co-owning Delhi Capitals. With this restructuring in motion, the question remains: could KKR positively impact The Hundred’s future?
Recent reports indicate that KKR has shown interest in acquiring a franchise within The Hundred’s expanding framework. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly considering an increase in franchises from the current eight to ten teams. This comes despite KKR’s initial hesitance to bid for the Trent Rockets; KKR officials felt the asking price was a bit high. Ultimately, the franchise was sold to Todd Boehly and Jonathan Goldstein for approximately £40 million. However, KKR has not ruled out re-entering the fray if the league’s structure changes.
Talks surrounding the expansion of The Hundred are gaining traction. The ECB is exploring options to integrate two new franchises, with Durham and possibly a venue in the south-west of England, namely Bristol or Taunton, in consideration. Current reports suggest that no changes will be applied until 2028, with 2029 targeted as a possible launch year for this enhanced competition.
As the ECB prepares for this transition, they are also anticipating increased broadcasting revenues and potentially lucrative deals for upcoming rights cycles. By expanding geographically, they aim to attract a broader audience and increase engagement.
The Knight Riders Group currently manages several teams across different leagues, including the main Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the UAE’s ILT20. They are also making waves as the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket in the U.S. With such a diverse portfolio, expanding into The Hundred would undoubtedly enhance their visibility and popularity in the UK.
The Hundred 2026 concluded with the Manchester Super Giants claiming the coveted title. They secured their first men’s championship by defeating the Trent Rockets by five wickets in the final match held at Lord’s on August 16, 2026. On the women’s side, the Trent Rockets likewise made history by conquering the Sunrisers Leeds by eight wickets, marking their inaugural championship as well.
As cricket enthusiasts await the changes to The Hundred’s structure, one thing is clear: KKR’s ambitious plans could reshape the tournament. Will they settle on a new franchise when the opportunity arises? The next few seasons will be pivotal in determining the direction both KKR and The Hundred will take.
