Afghanistan Requests Change for T20I Series Dates Against India

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is making headlines with a request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to adjust the schedule of their upcoming three-match T20I series. Originally set for September 13, 15, and 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, the ACB proposed new dates of September 11, 13, and 14. This change aims to coincide one of the matches with Ganesh Chaturthi, a major festival in India.

Why the Date Change?

Ganesh Chaturthi is not only a time for celebration but could potentially draw larger crowds to the stadium. The ACB believes playing on this festival day could enhance fan engagement and increase television viewership.

Despite this compelling reasoning, the BCCI has yet to make a formal decision regarding the ACB’s proposal. Furthermore, the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA), which is set to host the matches, has not received any official communication concerning a change in the schedule.

A Historic Series for Afghanistan

This T20I series marks a significant milestone for Afghanistan cricket, as it will be the first time they officially host India in a bilateral series, albeit in India. Afghanistan has been utilizing Indian venues for their home fixtures in the past years. The original schedule was announced earlier this month and the excitement is palpable.

In June, India and Afghanistan faced each other in a Test and ODI series where India triumphed, winning the ODI series 3-0 and also dominating the one-off Test. This upcoming T20I series will complete the all-format engagements for these two teams this season.

What’s Next?

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed enthusiasm for the series, stating that it’s a great opportunity for both teams and emphasizes their competitive spirit across all formats. With India enjoying a gap in their schedule after the Sri Lanka Test series that ends on August 27, there is hope that the BCCI might consider ACB’s request.

“We recently hosted Afghanistan for a Test and ODI series in June, and this T20I series will mean the two teams have now competed against each other across all three formats,” Saikia noted.

The cricketing world is now awaiting the BCCI’s decision on the schedule change. Will they adjust the dates to accommodate the festival? Only time will tell, but the stakes are undeniably high.
