Sharma’s strongest argument came in the third T20I, where he played one of the most explosive innings in recent Indian T20I history. He smashed 108 off just 34 balls, reaching his century in 30 deliveries to break Rohit Sharma’s long-standing record for the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian batter.

The innings was packed with intent and power. Sharma struck 11 sixes and nine fours, dismantling the Afghanistan attack and helping India post 221/7 in New Delhi.

Afghanistan were then bundled out for 94, as India completed a commanding 127-run victory to seal the series 3-0. The result underlined the gap between the two sides, but Sharma’s innings dominated the conversation long after the match ended.

Freedom, Confidence and Support

After the match, Sharma credited the team environment for allowing him to play his natural game without hesitation. He acknowledged the backing he received from captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir, both of whom encouraged his aggressive style.

That freedom appears to have unlocked his best form. In the three-match series, Sharma finished with 209 runs, emerging as India’s most destructive batter across the contest. His batting was not just about power; it also reflected clarity, confidence and timing.

The vice-captaincy has not yet been formally decided, and the final call will rest with the selection committee and team management ahead of India’s next T20I commitments. Even so, Sharma’s recent performances have put him firmly in the frame.

India Shift Focus to Asian Games 2026

India’s next major target is the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, where the Men in Blue will begin directly in the quarterfinals. As defending champions, India join Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the knockout stage, while the remaining teams fight through the preliminary groups.

The tournament will be played in Aichi-Nagoya, with India scheduled to play the second quarterfinal on September 28 at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. Their opponent will be the second-placed team from Group A.

The knockout path is already set, with Pakistan facing the Group B runner-up, Sri Lanka meeting the Group A winner and Bangladesh taking on the Group B winner in the other quarterfinal on September 29. The semifinals will follow on October 1, while the bronze-medal and gold-medal matches are slated for October 3.
