The clock is ticking for all ten IPL franchises. The IPL 2027 mini-auction is reportedly set for December 16 in Goa, and retention lists are due on November 15. Teams now have a short window to decide who stays, who goes and who they chase.
The IPL 2027 mini-auction will be held on December 16, 2026, reportedly at ITC Grand Goa. A franchise briefing is expected the day before, on December 15. It is a one-day affair, so teams will have to move fast.
The auction brings the event back to Indian soil after three straight overseas editions in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. It is also the last mini-auction of the IPL’s current cycle.
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|
| Retention list deadline | November 15, 2026 |
| Franchise briefing | December 15, 2026 |
| IPL 2027 mini-auction | December 16, 2026 (Goa) |
There is a twist. December 16 is also the date of the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. The auction will run at the same time as an international fixture.
Once the November 15 cutoff passes, the IPL will send every franchise the list of players registered for the auction. Teams will then shortlist their targets.
The final list, along with the order in which player sets will come up for bidding, is expected during the week before the auction. That leaves little time for last-minute strategy changes.
Each franchise must decide which players to hold on to and which to release. Those decisions shape the purse and the targets heading into the auction room. Every release opens a gap, and every retention closes one.
The trade market has been quiet since the 2026 season ended. Only two trades have been completed.
The first came in June, when Lucknow Super Giants sent captain Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals in exchange for wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. More recently, Delhi Capitals traded fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for uncapped leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
| Trade | Moves From | Moves To |
|---|---|---|
| Rishabh Pant | Lucknow Super Giants | Delhi Capitals |
| Kuldeep Yadav | Delhi Capitals | Lucknow Super Giants |
| T Natarajan | Delhi Capitals | Sunrisers Hyderabad |
| Zeeshan Ansari | Sunrisers Hyderabad | Delhi Capitals |
Under IPL rules, the trade window opens one month after a season ends. It stays active until one week before the auction. It then reopens and runs until one month before the next season starts.
With the window set to close a week before December 16, franchises have limited time to finish any further deals.
This is the final mini-auction of the current cycle. The IPL is expected to hold a mega auction before the 2028 season, which would give franchises the chance to rebuild their squads from scratch.
That makes this auction a bridge between two eras. Teams will look to patch weaknesses and fill key gaps without losing sight of the bigger reset ahead.
The official schedule for IPL 2027 has not been finalised. The IPL had earlier outlined a possible window of March 14 to May 30 for the tournament, so the auction will be a major early marker on the road to the new season.
Keep an eye on the November 15 retention deadline first. Big names could be kept or released, and that will set the tone for the auction. Then watch for any late trades before the window closes.
By December 16, all ten franchises will be in Goa with a plan. How well those plans survive the bidding is the next big question for IPL 2027.
