Mumbai Indians have made a big call. Kieron Pollard, the muscular finisher who helped deliver five IPL titles, is now the franchise’s head coach ahead of IPL 2027. He steps up from the batting coach role and takes over from Mahela Jayawardene in a major change at the Blue and Gold.
Pollard had been MI’s batting coach for the last four IPL seasons, after retiring from playing in the league ahead of the 2023 season. Now he has been elevated to the top post, and it is his first role in such a capacity.
The move comes just days after Jayawardene parted ways with the franchise last weekend. The timing signals a quick, decisive reset at a team that has not lifted the trophy since 2020.
Pollard’s association with MI stretches back to 2010, when he was first signed as a player. He was part of all five of MI’s IPL title wins, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He also won the Champions League T20 with the side in 2011 and 2013.
Team owner Nita Ambani underlined that bond. “Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family,” she said.
His record explains why the franchise trusts him. Pollard powered MI through countless tight finishes, and he also chipped in with the ball.

At 39, Pollard has not hung up his boots entirely. He turned out for MI New York in the MLC and Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL this year. Earlier this month, Joburg Super Kings signed him in the SA20 player auction for the 2027 season.
He has also played for MI’s sister franchises in the MLC, ILT20 and SA20 over the years, so he knows the MI culture well across leagues.
Pollard did not hide how much the job means to him. “It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians,” he said in a statement. “MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan [fanbase] means a great deal to me.”
He added that he wants to build on the team’s legacy, help talent grow and give the Paltan “many more reasons to celebrate.”
In a video posted on the franchise’s social media accounts, Pollard spoke directly to the fans. He called them the most loyal supporters and promised to bring back the intensity. “We look forward to having that fire in our belly, and hopefully see a fearless Mumbai Indians once again,” he said.
Ambani backed her new coach too. “Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role,” she said.
There is little time to settle in. Pollard’s first task as head coach will be to finalise the retentions ahead of the player auction, which is set to be held in Goa in December.
Those decisions will shape MI’s squad for IPL 2027. They will also set the tone for how Pollard wants his side to play: fearless, aggressive and proud of the badge.
Pollard has sat in the dugout as a coach and in the middle as a champion, and he now has to combine both experiences. Fans will be watching closely to see whether his familiar face and fierce mindset can spark a new chapter for a franchise with a serious trophy drought to end.
One thing is certain: the Paltan’s favourite finisher is now the man calling the shots.
