BCCI backs Rohit amid fresh speculation

Saikia did not leave much room for interpretation. He pointed to Rohit’s recent form and said there was no reason for debate at this stage. “He is playing superbly in all the matches. So what more do you want?” Saikia said, highlighting Rohit’s 138-run knock in the last match as proof that performance remains the strongest answer.

The BCCI secretary also made it clear that the board was not interested in feeding rumours. “For now, I don’t want to give any fodder to the speculators,” he said, underlining that the focus should remain on cricket rather than headlines.

No discussion on removing Rohit from the ODI squad

One of the biggest talking points around the story was whether the selectors had already begun planning an ODI future without Rohit. Saikia firmly denied that any such discussion had taken place.

“No, no. We have basically thought about what should be our way forward in terms of team preparation and all, because we have a lot of series coming up,” he said. The comment suggested that India’s immediate priorities are fixture-heavy and long-term, not centered on abrupt changes to senior players.

According to the BCCI, Rohit remains part of the broader World Cup conversation. While reports had suggested the Lord’s ODI in July against England might be his final international appearance, the board’s response was direct: those claims do not reflect its current stance.

The BCCI also used the opportunity to outline the packed calendar ahead, stressing that team planning is already underway. The schedule includes the Afghanistan series, the West Indies ODI series, the T20Is, a crucial tour of New Zealand, a likely series against Zimbabwe, and then the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

That run of fixtures gives India little breathing room, and the board appears determined to keep the squad stable while it maps out the next phase of preparation. For a side juggling formats and leadership roles, continuity may be more valuable than constant speculation.

VVS Laxman rumours also dismissed

The meeting also brought another round of gossip into the open, this time involving VVS Laxman. Reports had linked him with a possible promotion in the India set-up, including a role as director of cricket. Saikia dismissed that as well.

“I do not comment on new rumours. We have not had any such discussion, nor do we have any such intention,” he said. The statement was another attempt to close off speculation before it gathered more pace.

Laxman, however, will be associated with the India team in a different capacity. He is set to be the head coach during the Asian Games, while also continuing his work as head of the Centre of Excellence. His presence at the review meeting added to the importance of the discussion, which included key figures from the current setup.
