Bhuvneshwar Kumar is set for a notable return in Indian colours, this time as captain of a seven-member squad for the Hong Kong Sixes 2026. The veteran pacer will lead a side packed with IPL experience as India eye a strong showing in one of cricket’s quickest and most unpredictable formats.
A familiar face returns with leadership responsibility
For a bowler who has long been valued for control, movement and composure, the captaincy call adds another layer to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s comeback story. India have backed one of their most experienced white-ball players to guide a team that blends skill, versatility and proven short-format nous.
The squad includes Krunal Pandya, Nitish Rana, Shashank Singh, Rahul Tewatia, Rahul Tripathi and T Natarajan. It is a group built for the demands of six-a-side cricket, where every over can shift momentum in a matter of deliveries.
India’s squad brings depth and variety
Bhuvneshwar’s value goes beyond his ability to swing the new ball. His experience in high-pressure matches, along with his leadership profile in franchise cricket, makes him a natural fit for a format that rewards quick decisions and calm execution.
Krunal Pandya adds balance with both bat and ball, while Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi and Shashank Singh provide aggressive middle-order options. Rahul Tewatia’s finishing ability and T Natarajan’s left-arm pace give India further flexibility in a tournament where match-ups matter almost as much as talent.
“This will surely prove to be a quantum leap forward in terms of viewership and further validation for this iconic tournament,” said Anurag Bhatnagar, Cricket Hong Kong, China’s director of marketing and commercial.
What makes the Hong Kong Sixes so different?
The Hong Kong Sixes will be played from October 30 to November 1 at Mission Road Ground in Mong Kok. Twelve teams will take part across the three-day competition, with the event returning as one of cricket’s most distinctive global showcases.
The tournament format is compact and high-scoring. Each side fields six players, each innings lasts six overs, and every player apart from the wicketkeeper must bowl. One bowler is allowed to deliver two overs, a rule that can quickly tilt strategy in either direction.
Batters who reach 50 must retire not out, although they can return later if needed. If five wickets fall before the six overs are completed, the final batter continues with the fifth batter acting as runner. Those rules create constant urgency, making the Sixes a format where one over can decide everything.
India face a testing path in Pool C
India have been placed in Pool C alongside Pakistan and the UAE, setting up one of the most eye-catching group-stage contests of the tournament. The structure is unforgiving, with pool winners moving to the Cup semi-finals, second-placed teams to the Plate semi-finals and third-placed teams entering the Bowl competition.
That means there is little room for slow starts. In a format where innings are measured in a handful of overs, one poor spell or one explosive cameo can completely reshape the table.

Can India improve on their recent record?
India will also be looking to break a disappointing run at the revived event. Since the tournament returned in 2024, they have exited at the group stage in both editions and lost nine of their ten matches across the two seasons. Their only title in the competition came back in 2005, a reminder of how difficult the Sixes can be even for an established cricket nation.
Still, the presence of Bhuvneshwar adds a sense of stability. At 36, he remains a bowler capable of making an impact in short bursts, and his recent IPL final display for Royal Challengers Bengaluru showed he can still deliver in decisive moments.
In a format defined by pressure, accuracy and quick adaptation, India will hope their captain’s experience sets the tone. If Bhuvneshwar finds rhythm early and the batters attack with clarity, this squad has enough quality to cause a major stir in Hong Kong.
For India, the mission is clear: start fast, handle the pressure and make the most of a format where margins are razor-thin.
