Australia have received a major boost at the perfect time. Cameron Green has declared himself fit for the series decider in Cape Town, returning as a specialist batter after an abdominal injury. With the series locked at 1-1, his comeback could be a real turning point.

Green Back Just in Time for the Decider

Green missed the opening two Tests after failing to recover from an abdominal strain. He sustained the injury during the final ODI against South Africa on September 30.

His recovery, however, has moved faster than anyone expected. The all-rounder is now ready to slot straight into the playing XI at Newlands.

“I’m all good to go. Pretty surprised with how quick it’s actually healed or how functional I feel only a few weeks after,” Green said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

That confidence arrives just as Australia need a lift. The team is coming off a crushing innings-and-31-run defeat in the second Test at Gqeberha.

Bowling Unlikely for Now

Green was spotted bowling in the nets on Saturday. Even so, he is unlikely to bowl in the third Test.

His role in Cape Town will be as a specialist batter. That should still add valuable balance and depth to the lineup.

Why Australia Need Him Now

The middle order struggled badly at Gqeberha. Australia were dismissed for just 99 in the first innings, and they never recovered from that start.

Green’s return offers stability where the side looked most fragile. It also gives the selectors a flexible option in the batting order.

At least one change is confirmed for the XI. Nic Maddinson is most likely to make way for Green.

Flexible in the Order, Comfortable in the Middle

Green is 27 and says he can adapt to different positions. He feels most at home at No. 4 or No. 5, though.

“I think I’ve had a lot of experience up and down the order,” the Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder said.

That versatility could prove handy if Australia need to reshuffle in a high-pressure decider. A settled middle order is exactly what the side lacked last time out.

Lessons From Mackay, Darwin and Shield Cricket

Green also pointed to his recent form as a source of confidence. He highlighted the positives from Australia’s Tests against Bangladesh at Mackay and Darwin.

He says his domestic performances in Shield cricket helped shape his mindset for Cape Town.

“Certainly (the Tests) up in Mackay and Darwin were huge positives in kind of how I wanted to play the game. There are probably learnings I took from the last Shield game I played, (in) kind of how I wanted to play and it felt pretty natural to me,” Green said.

That sense of natural rhythm could be vital on a big stage. Australia will want his clarity at the crease.

What to Expect at Newlands

The third and final Test begins on October 27. Everything is on the line, with the series level and momentum up for grabs.

Australia will need a strong batting display to regain control after the Gqeberha setback. Green’s return gives the side stability, flexibility and a fresh injection of belief.

South Africa will head into the decider with the confidence of a dominant win. Australia, though, now have one of their key players back at the right moment.

Can Green help Australia turn the series around in Cape Town? The answer starts on October 27.
