The excitement is building for cricket fans as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially announced the squads for the highly anticipated ACC Women’s Asia Cup and Women’s Asian Games. This thrilling news was unveiled on Sunday, August 16, with Fatima Sana taking the reins as captain for both tournaments. Her leadership has garnered significant attention, especially after she piloted the women’s national side in this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup held in England.
The Women’s Asia Cup is set to be hosted at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium from August 28 to September 13. A total of 8 teams, including traditional rivals India, will compete in this prestigious series, totaling 15 matches. The Pakistan Women’s National Cricket Team has been drawn into Group A alongside India, China, and Thailand, while Group B features strong teams like Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates. Mark your calendars for the clash against India, scheduled for September 5!
Transitioning to the Asian Games, the women’s team will kick off their campaign against Thailand, setting the stage for a potentially thrilling quarter-final match on September 17. Should Fatima Sana and her squad overcome the challenge posed by Thailand, they are poised to face either Sri Lanka or Malaysia in a highly competitive semi-final on September 20.
The PCB showcased its commitment to fielding a robust team by securing its top-ranked cricketers for both tournaments. The selected players include Fatima Sana, Muneeba Ali Siddiqui, Shawaal Zulfiqar, and several others who have shown remarkable talent and resilience on the field. However, the squads do feature slight variations. For the Women’s Asia Cup, Najiha Alvi, Waheeda Akhtar, and Sadia Iqbal have made the cut, while Aliya Riaz, Tasmia Rubab, and Humna Bilal will represent the team in the Asian Games.
Adding to the competitive edge, former Men’s National Team fast bowler Wahab Riaz has been appointed as the head coach and mentor for both tournaments. His vast experience promises to enhance team performance and strategy.
