Renshaw returns for key Test

Cummins had briefly suggested Australia were considering Scott Boland alongside himself, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, but a later assessment of the surface convinced the selectors to stick with their veteran spinner.

The decision underlines Lyon’s standing in home conditions. The 38-year-old, who returned from a hamstring injury in Darwin, has not missed a home red-ball Test when fit since 2012, and Australia clearly value his experience even when the pitch appears to favour seam.

Cummins admitted the team had not produced anywhere near their best in the opening match, but remained confident that the group could respond quickly. “I certainly felt like we didn’t play anywhere near our best, and they played really well and they deserved to win,” he said.

The challenge for Australia now is less about wholesale change and more about execution. With a settled bowling attack and a reshaped top order, the hosts want to put pressure back on Bangladesh from the opening session rather than allow the visitors another chance to control the contest.

“He’s been really impressive, some great off-season tours to Pakistan and Bangladesh with the white-ball, so he looks in good nick.”
