Seamus Coleman Left Out of Republic of Ireland Squad

Seamus Coleman has been left out of the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, marking a notable selection call as Heimir Hallgrimsson reshapes his group for the next international window. The veteran defender, who remains without a club after ending his long Everton spell, was part of the squad in June but will not feature this time.

The decision comes ahead of a demanding run of four matches, beginning with a trip to Kosovo on 24 September, followed by meetings with Israel on 27 September and Austria on 1 October. Ireland then face Israel again in Group B3 on 4 October, leaving little room for error in a window that could define their campaign.

Coleman misses out as Ireland refresh the squad

Coleman’s omission stands out because of his experience and influence. The former Ireland captain has 81 caps and spent 17 years with Everton, making 433 appearances for the Premier League club before leaving at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Hallgrimsson made it clear the door is not closed on the 37-year-old. Speaking at the squad announcement on Thursday, the manager said: It is my intention in whatever shape or form that he would be with us in the future, hopefully as a player.

He also explained the thinking behind Coleman sitting out this camp. His intention is to play, he is keeping fit but he has not been training with a club so we felt together, and it was more his decision, that it would be appropriate he sit out this one, mostly because he thought it was unfair to other players that he would be taking up a place.

Experience remains valued despite exclusion

The message from the manager suggests Coleman is still firmly in Ireland’s plans if the right circumstances align. For now, though, squad balance and competitive fairness appear to have shaped the call.

That decision also reflects the wider challenge facing Hallgrimsson: building a squad that blends established internationals with emerging options, while managing injuries and club-less players carefully. Coleman’s absence is less a farewell than a pause, but it is still a significant moment for one of Ireland’s most recognisable modern players.

Injuries force further changes

Coleman is not the only absence. Robbie Brady is also out as he remains without a club, while captain Nathan Collins misses out through injury. Collins is recovering from a calf problem picked up in Brentford’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Sunderland on 5 September.

Several other players were unavailable due to fitness issues. Evan Ferguson, Josh Cullen, Jack Taylor, Mikey Johnston and Oisin McEntee were all not considered because of injuries, while QPR defender Jimmy Dunne also suffered a muscular setback earlier this month.

Those setbacks have forced Ireland to look deeper into the squad pool, creating space for new names to step forward during a crucial four-match stretch.

There is, however, plenty of intrigue in the new-look group. Sheffield United loanee Liam Kitching has received his first call-up, while uncapped Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan and Hibernian forward Owen Elding are both in contention for their first senior caps during the international window.

Kitching, a left-sided centre-back on a season-long loan from Coventry City, adds another defensive option at a time when Ireland are navigating injuries and absences. The squad also includes a mix of familiar names and developing talents who will hope to seize their opportunity across the four fixtures.
