Steve Smith ‘100% Fine’ for Cape Town Decider, Says Alex Carey

Steve Smith has been tested by injury scares, but Australia are backing him to be there when it matters most. Ahead of the series-deciding third Test in Cape Town, wicketkeeper Alex Carey has delivered a confident fitness update, calling the veteran batter “100 percent fine” after a bruising stretch in Gqeberha.

Carey Gives Smith the All-Clear

Speaking to Cricinfo, Carey said Smith is doing well and will begin his preparation for the Cape Town Test soon. He confirmed there were genuine concerns during the second Test, but insisted the batter is now ready to go.

The decider carries huge weight. Whoever wins the third Test takes the three-match series 2-1, and it is a crucial fixture in the current World Test Championship cycle.

“Yeah, no, Steve’s going well. Spent a lot of time with him, as I always do. He’ll start prepping for Tuesday. Today he’ll have a hit. Yeah, I think he’s 100% fine,” Carey said.

Carey also said he is looking forward to seeing Smith back in the middle, hoping for the big runs Australian fans have come to expect. He admitted the batter has been slightly affected by his neck but stressed he is ready.

The Injury Scares in Gqeberha

Finger trouble in the field

During the second Test at St George’s Park, Smith picked up a finger injury while fielding. The blow forced him to walk off the ground temporarily, and it raised early alarm bells for the Australian camp.

Neck discomfort on Day 4

Later in the same match, on Day 4, Smith showed visible discomfort in his neck. That forced him to miss some parts of the game and cast further doubt over his availability for the decider.

Multiple knocks in a single Test is never ideal, especially in a series that is finely balanced. Carey’s update suggests the worst is behind him.

Smith’s Form: Starts Without the Big Score

At 37, Smith has struggled to hit his best in South Africa. He has made a few starts but has not yet converted them into the major innings Australia rely on him for.

Test Venue 1st Innings 2nd Innings
1st Test Durban 25 27
2nd Test Gqeberha 28 3

That is 83 runs across four innings. For a batter of his pedigree, Cape Town looks like the perfect stage for a statement knock.

How the Series Got Here

Australia’s statement win in Durban

Australia opened the series with a commanding 214-run victory in Durban. It looked like the visitors had taken control early.

South Africa hit back hard

The Proteas responded in Gqeberha, with Temba Bavuma’s century putting them in a commanding position. South Africa posted 425 in their innings, then used the damp conditions to bowl the Pat Cummins-led side out for 99 in the first innings.

Australia fought back to reach 295 in the second innings, but it was not enough. South Africa won by an innings and 31 runs to level the series at 1-1.

Match Result Margin
1st Test, Durban Australia won 214 runs
2nd Test, Gqeberha South Africa won Innings and 31 runs

What Lies Ahead in Cape Town

With the series level and momentum swinging, the third Test has all the ingredients of a classic. South Africa will be buoyed by their dominant win, while Australia will lean on experience to respond.

Having Smith fit and firing could be the difference. If Carey’s words are accurate, the star batter is set to return to the crease, and Australia will hope the big runs finally arrive when the series is on the line.
