R Ashwin has thrown a fresh twist into the Hardik Pandya transfer chatter, and this one may not please Chennai Super Kings fans. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran spinner said a move from Mumbai Indians to CSK looks like a “real long shot” and instead backed Rajasthan Royals as the franchise most likely to land the all-rounder ahead of the IPL 2027 auction.
The speculation around Hardik Pandya and Chennai Super Kings has been building for weeks, especially with the auction cycle approaching. But Ashwin was clear in his assessment, suggesting that while the idea of Pandya in yellow may sound appealing, the reality is far less certain.
“There have been conversations that Dhoni will personally convince Hardik Pandya to come to CSK. It will be a great addition for CSK. But in my opinion, it is a real long shot. From what I’ve heard, RR are at the top of the list in the Hardik trade,” Ashwin said.
That comment has shifted attention away from Chennai and toward Rajasthan, a franchise now being viewed as a serious contender in the race.
One of the reasons CSK are being viewed as an unlikely destination is the broader coaching and management picture. Zaheer Khan was appointed Chennai Super Kings head coach in September 2026, replacing Stephen Fleming, and reports of an unresolved rift involving Pandya and Zaheer have only added more uncertainty around the possibility of a deal.
Those reports have not been independently confirmed in detail, but they have become part of the wider conversation around Pandya’s future. In a transfer environment where perception matters almost as much as performance, that uncertainty can be enough to cool a move.
“The timing, the leadership setup and the reported complications all make a CSK switch difficult to imagine right now,” one IPL observer noted.
Pandya’s 2026 campaign with Mumbai Indians was solid, but below the standards he has set in previous seasons. Retained by MI for Rs 16.35 crore, he scored 206 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 138.25 and picked up four wickets.
Those numbers marked a decline from his IPL 2025 output, when he had 224 runs and 14 wickets. The dip does not reduce his value, but it does explain why franchises are monitoring him closely ahead of the next retention deadline.
| Season | Runs | Wickets | Matches | Strike Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPL 2025 | 224 | 14 | Not specified | Not specified |
| IPL 2026 | 206 | 4 | 10 | 138.25 |
For Mumbai, the season was difficult on multiple fronts. The franchise managed only four wins in 14 league games and finished ninth, a result that has naturally prompted questions about the direction of the team moving forward.
If Ashwin’s reading is accurate, Rajasthan Royals are now at the front of the queue. That would be a major storyline given Pandya’s profile as a proven India star, a high-impact batting option, and a captaincy-calibre all-rounder.
RR’s interest makes strategic sense. Teams entering a new cycle often want a player who can influence multiple phases of the game, and Pandya fits that description better than most. He can bat in pressure situations, bowl useful overs, and bring leadership experience to a changing squad.
Rajasthan may be leading the speculation, but they are not alone. Kolkata Knight Riders have also been linked with Pandya as they look for a new captain following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement. Lucknow Super Giants have likewise been mentioned as a possible destination, though no formal offer has been confirmed from any franchise.
At this stage, the picture remains fluid. No club has publicly locked in a bid, and the final outcome will depend on how each franchise balances ambition, budget, and leadership plans during the retention window.
The timeline is now becoming critical. Retention lists are due on November 15, 2026, and the IPL 2027 auction is scheduled for December 2026. That leaves little room for hesitation, especially with a player of Pandya’s stature likely to attract intense internal discussion.
For now, Ashwin’s comments have done what every major transfer rumour tends to do: narrow the field while opening a new round of debate. CSK may still remain in the conversation, but based on this latest assessment, Rajasthan Royals appear to have moved into pole position.
As the deadline approaches, the Hardik Pandya story is shaping up to be one of the biggest off-field talking points of the IPL 2027 cycle. The next few weeks should reveal whether Ashwin’s prediction turns out to be sharp reading of the market or just another twist in a high-stakes trade race.
