Lisandro Martínez has moved to calm a growing storm at Manchester United after apologising for his public criticism of the club’s recruitment following the defeat to Atlético Madrid. The defender admitted his comments came in the heat of frustration and said the timing and setting were wrong.
Apology follows heated criticism
The Argentina international came under scrutiny after claiming United had not invested enough in the summer window and suggesting the club needed greater backing in key areas. His remarks quickly made headlines, not least because they appeared to question the direction of the club’s hierarchy.
After talks with the leadership and manager Michael Carrick, Martínez issued a fresh statement on social media. “Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity,” he wrote. “The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise.”
What Martínez said after the defeat
Martínez had been unusually direct when reflecting on the 2-0 loss in the Champions League, insisting more was expected from the club’s transfer business. He also suggested that Carrick had not been sufficiently backed and that Manchester United needed a stronger, more complete squad to handle nights of that magnitude.
His comments landed at a sensitive moment. United’s poor start to the campaign has already placed pressure on Carrick, and the atmosphere around the club has become increasingly tense as results have failed to improve.
Manchester United’s recruitment under the spotlight
The backlash has reignited debate around Manchester United’s summer spending and squad balance. Reports indicate the club invested heavily in midfield additions, while a left-back remained a target that was not fully addressed, adding to frustrations inside the dressing room.
That broader dissatisfaction appears to have been shared by several players, with the squad understood to have concerns over the way the team has been assembled. The issue is not simply one of money spent, but whether the spending matched the team’s biggest needs.
Numbers that deepen the pressure
United have made their worst start to a league campaign since 1986, collecting just six points from their first six league matches. They have also already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton, a result that intensified scrutiny around the manager and the squad.
| Measure | Detail |
|---|---|
| League points | 6 from 6 matches |
| Old Trafford pressure | Highest in recent seasons |
| Carabao Cup exit | Defeat to Brighton |
| Reported consequence | Fine for Martínez |
While the club is not expected to disclose any disciplinary action publicly, it is understood that Martínez has been fined. The apology, however, appears to have been accepted internally after what sources described as a positive conversation with the club’s leadership.
A moment of frustration, but lasting questions remain
There is no sign that the incident has broken the squad, but it has exposed the scale of the frustration inside the dressing room. Martínez’s willingness to speak openly may resonate with some supporters, yet it also places a spotlight on how Manchester United are being run and whether the current squad is truly equipped to compete at the top level.
One club insider’s view, according to the tone of the discussions, was that the matter was handled quickly to prevent further damage. “The key thing is to reset and move on,” was the message around the situation, even if the broader concerns over recruitment are unlikely to disappear overnight.
For Carrick, the challenge is twofold: steady the results and keep the squad aligned. For Martínez, the next step is to let his football do the talking after an apology that has closed one chapter, but not the bigger debate.
United now face the difficult task of turning internal frustration into on-pitch response. Until that happens, every misstep will carry extra weight.
