Mandhana Starts Captaincy With Dominant Series Win Over Zimbabwe

Smriti Mandhana could hardly have asked for a better start to her full-time T20I captaincy. India wrapped up the series against Zimbabwe with a crushing nine-wicket win in the second T20I, chasing down 103 in just 8.5 overs to seal the contest with one match still to play.

It was the kind of performance that combined control, aggression and confidence from the very first over. India finished on 104/1 in a chase that never looked in doubt, and they did it with 67 balls remaining, the most by any team in a 100-plus chase in women’s T20Is.

India’s bowlers set the tone early

The platform for victory was laid by a disciplined bowling effort that kept Zimbabwe under pressure throughout their innings. Openers were denied any real momentum, and the home side were restricted to 20/1 at the end of the Powerplay after Nandani Sharma removed Kelis Ndhlovu in the fourth over.

From there, the innings never really recovered. Zimbabwe slipped to 20/2 and then 30/3 by the ninth over, showing just how little breathing room India allowed. The middle overs were tight, sharp and efficient, with every scoring opportunity made to feel difficult.

Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano and captain Josephine Nkomo briefly tried to steady things with a 45-run partnership, but even that stand could not break India’s grip on the game. Zimbabwe’s innings drifted from one phase to the next without acceleration, and they reached only 75/5 in 14.2 overs before finishing on 102/8.

Niki Prasad delivers a rare double strike

One of the standout moments came from Niki Prasad, who struck twice in the first two balls of her spell. That made her only the third player across men’s and women’s T20I cricket to achieve the feat, underlining just how decisive her burst was in the middle overs.

She finished with excellent figures of 2/7, while Mugeri-Tiripano top-scored for Zimbabwe with 34. It was a reminder that even when a score looks competitive on paper, sustained pressure can make it feel much smaller in practice.

Shafali Verma turns the chase into a blur

If India’s bowling effort was about control, the batting chase was all-out assault. Shafali Verma led the charge with a blistering 24-ball half-century, smashing six fours and four sixes on her way to 55. From the moment she opened with a boundary, Zimbabwe were forced onto the back foot.

Mandhana and Shafali attacked the bowling in waves. Shafali took on Nyasha Gwanzura immediately, while Mandhana punished the next over as India’s openers raced to 76/0 inside six overs, the second-best Powerplay score by India in women’s T20Is.

The pressure kept building with every over. Shafali hit five boundaries off Gwanzura in one over, then produced a sequence of four, four and six against Michelle Mavunga to push the chase into overdrive. The assault continued with a huge hit off Olinder Chare before she reached her fifty with a six in the eighth over.

Records, milestones and a statement win

Shafali’s innings carried major statistical weight as well. Her 55 was her ninth fifty-plus score in 2026, the most by any player in a calendar year in women’s T20Is. The opening pair also registered their ninth 50-plus stand of the year, matching the calendar-year record in women’s T20I cricket.

Mandhana remained unbeaten on 47 and fittingly finished the chase with a six, sealing the series in emphatic fashion. It was a chase that lasted barely more than eight overs, but it said plenty about the intent and confidence of this India side.

As one India support staff member put it after the match, the team was “calm with the ball and fearless with the bat” — a combination that made the result feel inevitable once the Powerplay was over. For Mandhana, the first assignment as full-time captain ended with a decisive answer: India are ready to play on the front foot.

What the win means for India

Beyond the scoreline, the nature of the victory stood out. India did not just win; they dominated every phase, from early wickets to a ruthless chase. That balance will be especially encouraging as the side looks to build rhythm and depth under Mandhana’s leadership.

Zimbabwe fought for moments, but India controlled the match from the outset and never allowed a comeback to take shape. With the series already secured, the final game now offers India a chance to deepen their momentum and continue refining their combination ahead of bigger assignments.

For now, though, the headline is simple: Mandhana’s captaincy era has begun with a statement. And it began with a chase so fast, it barely gave Zimbabwe time to react.
