Record Run Fest at Hagley Oval: India’s Bowlers Endure Unwanted T20I Milestone

adminCricket3 hours ago7 Views

It was a wild night in Christchurch. New Zealand blasted 225/4 against India in the first T20I at Hagley Oval, their highest total against India in a bilateral match. Five Indian bowlers went for 40 or more, a first in India’s T20I history. Yet the story still had a late twist.

Fireworks in the Powerplay

New Zealand attacked from ball one, even with some early swing on offer. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, playing his first match for India in nearly four years, started well. Tim Seifert then hit him for two fours and a six in his second over, taking 17 runs.

Finn Allen followed by taking 17 off an over from Arshdeep Singh. Mayank Yadav gave India their first breakthrough when he removed Seifert for 24 in the fifth over.

The pressure did not ease. Allen and Daryl Mitchell each hit Axar Patel for a six, and New Zealand finished the powerplay on 65/1.

Tilak Varma’s Catch Ends Allen’s Blitz

Allen’s blazing 45 ended in the eighth over, when Axar had him caught by Tilak Varma. It was a brilliant catch and a rare moment of relief for India. Arshdeep then removed Mitchell in the 13th over, leaving New Zealand on 122/3.

Glenn Phillips Takes Over

India hoped the wickets would slow the scoring, but Glenn Phillips had other plans. He joined Bevon Jacobs, and the pair added 73 runs off just 32 balls.

Jacobs hit 31 off 16 deliveries, including three sixes, before a run-out in the 18th over. Phillips stayed unbeaten on 82 with eight fours and three sixes, at a strike rate of 205.

Death Overs Damage

New Zealand scored 67 runs in the final five overs. It was their highest T20I total at home and joint-highest against India in the format.

The Unwanted Record

This was the first time in India’s 19-year T20I history that five bowlers conceded 40 or more runs in the same match. Axar Patel was the most expensive, giving away 51 in four overs. Bhuvneshwar and Arshdeep were also hit hard, while Mayank Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy went for 40 each.

Indian Bowling Figures

Bowler Overs Runs Wickets Economy
Bhuvneshwar Kumar 4 49 0 12.25
Arshdeep Singh 4 45 1 11.25
Mayank Yadav 4 40 1 10.00
Axar Patel 4 51 1 12.75
Nitish Kumar Reddy 4 40 0 10.00

Every Indian bowler conceded at least ten runs an over. Only three wickets fell to the bowlers, and the fourth New Zealand dismissal was a run-out.

India’s Batters Rescue the Night

The bowlers took the heat, but the batters answered. Sanju Samson played a fine knock of 67 off 33 balls. Naman Dhir then added a rapid unbeaten 42 off just 15 deliveries.

Together they took the Men in Blue over the line with four wickets in hand in the final over. It was a chase that turned a bowling disaster into a series-opening win.

Key Match Numbers

Stat Value
New Zealand total 225/4
Powerplay score 65/1
Glenn Phillips 82* (strike rate 205)
Runs in last five overs 67
Sanju Samson 67 off 33
Naman Dhir 42* off 15

What It Means for the Series

India won, but the bowling unit will have plenty to fix. Conceding 40-plus runs from five bowlers is not a pattern any side wants to repeat. Death-over control and powerplay discipline are now the big questions.

With four matches still to play, the Black Caps have shown they can attack any line and length. Expect India’s bowling plans to be a major talking point before the next game.
