Sanju Samson turned a tough chase into a highlight reel. Facing a daunting 226 against New Zealand in the first T20I, the India opener unleashed 67 off 33 balls, rewrote parts of the record books and handed his side a powerful launchpad in Christchurch.
Most expect Abhishek Sharma to be the chief aggressor at the top of India’s order. On Thursday, though, Samson grabbed that role and ran with it.
Chasing 226 demanded a flying start, and the Kerala batter delivered. He punished the Kiwi bowlers with breathtaking strokeplay and kept the required rate in check from the opening overs.
He departed after leaving India in a solid position to win the match. That is exactly what a chase of this size demands from an opener.
Samson reached his half-century in just 23 balls. That made it the fourth-fastest T20I fifty ever recorded in Christchurch.
| Balls | Batter | Opposition and Year |
|---|---|---|
| 19 | Glenn Phillips (New Zealand) | vs Bangladesh, 2022 |
| 21 | Cameron White (Australia) | vs New Zealand, 2010 |
| 22 | Harry Brook (England) | vs New Zealand, 2025 |
| 23 | Sanju Samson (India) | vs New Zealand, 2026 |
It also adds to a growing list of rapid fifties for Samson himself, with the quickest of them coming in just 20 balls.
| Balls | Opposition and Venue |
|---|---|
| 20 | vs Afghanistan, Delhi, 2026 |
| 20 | vs West Indies, Hyderabad, 2026 |
| 21 | vs West Indies, Ranchi, 2026 |
| 22 | vs Bangladesh, Hyderabad, 2024 |
| 23 | vs New Zealand, Christchurch, 2026 |
| 26 | vs West Indies, Kolkata, 2026 |
| 26 | vs England, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2026 |
This knock was Samson’s eighth score of 50 or more in 2026. That ties him with Ishan Kishan and puts him in elite company for India in a single year.
| Scores | Batter | Year |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | Suryakumar Yadav | 2022 |
| 9 | Virat Kohli | 2022 |
| 9 | Abhishek Sharma | 2026 |
| 8 | Ishan Kishan | 2026 |
| 8 | Sanju Samson | 2026 |
With the year still going, the chase for Suryakumar’s mark of 11 is a storyline worth watching.
Samson now has 12 scores of 50 or more as an opener for India in T20Is. That moves him past Shikhar Dhawan on the all-time list.
| Scores | Opener |
|---|---|
| 32 | Rohit Sharma |
| 21 | KL Rahul |
| 17 | Abhishek Sharma |
| 12 | Sanju Samson |
| 11 | Shikhar Dhawan |
Rohit Sharma’s 32 remains far out of reach. Even so, Samson’s pace of scoring in 2026 suggests he could keep climbing.
The momentum behind this knock is huge. Samson helped India win the T20 World Cup 2026 and was named Player of the Tournament. He finished with 321 runs in just five innings at a strike rate of 199.38.
The 31-year-old has now scored 770 runs in T20Is in 2026. Many of those innings have won matches almost single-handedly.
An opener who can both anchor and attack gives India real flexibility at the top. With Abhishek Sharma also in the mix, the opening pair looks capable of putting pressure on any attack from ball one.
Samson’s dream run continues, and New Zealand’s bowlers now know exactly what they are up against for the rest of the series.
