USWNT Stunned by Spain in Early 2-0 Friendly Defeat

The USWNT got a sharp reminder of the gap that still exists at the very top of women’s football. Spain arrived in Washington and struck twice inside 14 minutes, turning a heavyweight friendly into a lesson in ruthlessness, control and finishing.

Spain strike early and punish mistakes

Patri Guijarro opened the scoring in the third minute with a powerful 20-yard effort, taking advantage of a turnover and too much space in front of the US defense. Eleven minutes later, Spain doubled the lead when Salma Paralluelo found Eva Navarro for a simple finish after another breakdown on the left side.

For Emma Hayes’ side, the damage was done almost before the game had settled. The early goals forced the Americans into chase mode, and while the second half brought improvement, the opening spell defined the contest.

Hayes did not hide from the reality of the performance.

“You can’t afford to go 2-0 down against the best team in the world, especially the way we conceded those goals,” Hayes said. “That’s the learning.”

Midfield struggles shape the first half

The US looked disjointed throughout the opening 45 minutes, with giveaways, loose clearances and slow reactions undermining any attempt to settle into rhythm. The midfield trio of Rose Lavelle, Lily Yohannes and Lindsey Heaps struggled to connect cleanly with the attack or protect the back line with enough consistency.

Spain, even without several key names, looked sharper and more decisive. Their absentees included Aitana Bonmatí, Vicky Lopez, Mariona Caldentey and goalkeeper Cata Coll, yet the reigning world champions still controlled the key moments that mattered most.

It was a reminder that elite teams do not need to dominate every phase to win. They only need a few clean moments to punish hesitation.

Second-half reaction offers some encouragement

The American response after halftime was far more composed. Hayes adjusted the press, the team improved its shape, and Spain failed to register a shot on target in the second half. The US also outshot Spain 13-6 across the match, suggesting the final margin did not reflect the American share of territory after the break.

But the biggest problem remained in front of goal. Sophia Wilson had an effort ruled out for offside after video review, and the best chance to change the momentum came from the penalty spot in the 67th minute.

Lilly Yohannes stepped up to take it and saw her stutter-step attempt saved by Adriana Nanclares. It was a surprising choice given that the 19-year-old had not previously taken a penalty in her club career, while Wilson has a spotless 11-for-11 record in NWSL competition.

Yohannes later explained she was second on the team’s list behind Heaps, but the miss summed up a frustrating night for the hosts.

Big returns, late pressure and a physical finish

There were still reasons for the home crowd to pay attention in the second half. Mallory Swanson made her first appearance in 710 days after maternity leave, while Ashley Sanchez returned to the national team and nearly scored late from a cross.

Spain also increased the physical edge in the closing stages, finishing with 12 fouls to the US’s four and seeing Athenea del Castillo sent off in stoppage time for a hair pull. The red card changed little about the result, but it underlined the intensity that had built as the match wore on.

Trinity Rodman kept the tone balanced after the final whistle, saying the team can learn from games like this rather than fear them. “There’s going to be games like that, and I’m happy it’s not the World Cup right now,” she said. “You take what you can from this game and go into the next game.”

What the result means for both sides

This was not a World Cup knockout tie, but it carried plenty of weight. Spain remain a benchmark, sitting atop FIFA’s rankings for a long stretch and showing why they are considered one of the favorites for Brazil next year. The US, meanwhile, are still in a growth phase under Hayes, with a demanding schedule built to expose weaknesses before the biggest stage arrives.

The next meeting comes Tuesday in Chester, Pennsylvania, and the Americans now have a clear target: create cleaner chances, finish better and avoid another early collapse. They have not gone consecutive matches without scoring since the 2023 World Cup, but the margin for error against elite opposition is shrinking fast.

If this was a stress test, Spain passed it comfortably. For the USWNT, the lesson was painful, immediate and impossible to ignore.
